Burroughs Wellcome Fund: Clinical Scientist Awards in Translational Research Although basic research into the mechanisms of disease has accelerated in recent years, the knowledge into improved patient care and the translation of clinical insights into hypotheses that can be validated in the laboratory are threatened by changes in medical research and health care financing. The rapid growth of managed care, for example, has limited the financial resources available to many academic medical centers, which historically have been at the forefront of both basic and clinical research. Consequently, many physician-scientists, who play a critical role in identifying clinical questions and implementing advances in the basic sciences, have fewer financial resources, less time, and smaller patient populations available for clinical studies. Recognizing this problem, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund created its Clinical Scientist Awards in Translational Research program to support established independent physician-scientists who are dedicated to translational research--the two-way transfer between work at the laboratory bench and patient care. The program is intended to help protect award recipients' time to pursue the vital link between basic and clinical research. Importantly, the program aims to identify and reward proven mentors and to increase their capacity to train the next generation of investigators skilled in translational research. In this way, BWF hopes to increase the ranks of experienced physician-scientists critically positioned to bridge the gap between bench and bedside. The program's goal is to foster the development and productivity of established independent physician-scientists who will strengthen translational research, through their own studies as well as their mentoring of physician-scientist trainees. The awards are intended to give recipients the freedom and flexibility to explore fundamental scientific questions, to apply the resulting knowledge at the bedside, and to bring insights from the clinical setting back to the laboratory for further exploration. BWF hopes these efforts will lead to better understanding of disease mechanisms and to new methods of diagnosing, treating, and preventing disease.
Deadline: September 1, 2006

Burroughs Wellcome Fund: Investigators in Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease The Burroughs Wellcome Fund has supported research in infectious disease since 1981 when it began funding modern molecular approaches to understanding what have been called the great neglected diseases-malaria, the pathogenic fungi, and human parasites-that primarily affect people in underdeveloped countries. Since that time, much more attention has been paid to the urgent needs of these fields. In 2000, the Fund decided to turn its attention to the larger issues of human-pathogen interactions in these infectious diseases and others, opening the door for funding work in bacterial and viral diseases. BWF's Investigators in Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease program is designed to incorporate elements of previously funded areas of research, and to focus primarily on the interaction of pathogens with their human hosts. Taking advantage of recent developments in genomics, immunology, and other areas, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund's new Investigators in Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease program provides an opportunity to bring aggressive, multidisciplinary approaches to investigating infectious disease. The Investigators in Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease program is now the only BWF award program specifically focused on infectious diseases. It supersedes several programs which were phased out in the 2000/2001 grant cycle, including the New Investigator and Scholar Awards in Molecular Pathogenic Mycology, New Investigator and Scholar Awards in Molecular Parasitology, and New Initiatives in Malaria Awards.
