Symantec will award Symantec Research Labs Graduate Fellowships to outstanding Ph.D. and M.S. students who meet the eligibility criteria listed below. A key goal of the program is to fund innovative research that has real-world value, in areas of Symantec's business interests in information security, availability, and integrity.
Deadline: November 17, 2006
National Health and Medical Research Council: Australia Fellowship
The Australia Fellowship is the most prestigious Research Fellowship offered by the National Health and Medical Research Council. The total package for an Australia Fellowship will be provided as a one-line amount of $800,000 (Australian dollars) per annum for 5 years. Successful applicants are to negotiate with their proposed Administering Institution on its use. It is also expected that the employing institution would provide assistance to successful applicants, for example, with set up and relocation costs. Australia Fellowship holders will devote themselves full time to the research program outlined in the application (up to 20% of their time may be spent on activities directly related to the research program such as clinical, commercial, policy development, public health, etc).
Deadline: December 8, 2006
American Federation for Aging Research: AFAR Research Grants
The major goal of this program is to assist in the development of the careers of junior investigators committed to pursuing careers in the field of aging research.
Deadline: December 15, 2006
American Federation for Aging Research: Beeson Career Development Awards (BCDA)
In a unique and innovative partnership, The National Institute on Aging (NIA) and The John A. Hartford Foundation, Atlantic Philanthropies, and The Starr Foundation (Foundations) are supporting this initiative which aims to sustain and promote the careers of clinically trained faculty who are pursuing research in aging. This program provides support to young faculty members in strong research environments to enable them to gain skills and experience in clinically-relevant aging research and to establish an independent program of research in this field.

American Federation for Aging Research: Fannie E. Rippel Foundation/AFAR New Investigator Awards on Gender Differences in Aging
This new program provides two awards of up to $60,000 each to junior faculty committed to pursuing careers in gender-based aging research. The program encourages scientific investigation that leads to a better understanding of normal biological aging as well as mechanisms underlying age-related diseases and disorders as they relate to gender aging.
Deadline: December 15, 2006
American Federation for Aging Research: Glenn/AFAR Breakthroughs in Gerontology Awards
The goal of the Glenn/AFAR Breakthroughs in Gerontology Award (BIG) program is to provide timely support to a small number of pilot research programs that may be of relatively high risk but which offer significant promise of yielding transforming discoveries in the fundamental biology of aging. The hope is that one or more of the funded research projects will lead to major new insights into the molecular factors that coordinate aging in multiple cells and tissues, and the ways in which the aging process is differentially timed in long-lived species.
Deadline: December 15, 2006
American Federation for Aging Research: The Julie Martin Mid-Career Awards in Aging Research
The Ellison Medical Foundation and AFAR developed this program to encourage outstanding mid-career scientists to conduct research proposed by scientists who have not been engaged in aging research, but whose research is relevant and leads to novel approaches to aging, and research proposed by scientists that is high risk, and thus not attractive to NIH or other traditional sources, but holds the potential for high payoff in advancing our understanding of basic aging. Research projects concerned with understanding the basic mechanisms of aging are encouraged.
Deadline: December 15, 2006
American Federation for Aging Research: The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation/AFAR New Investigator Awards This new program supports research in areas in which more scientific investigation is needed to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of Alzheimer's Disease. The program also encourages junior investigators in the United States and Israel to pursue research and academic careers in the neurosciences and Alzheimer's disease in particular. The MSTAR Program provides medical students, early in their training, with an enriching experience in aging-related research and geriatrics, under the mentorship of top experts in the field. This program introduces students to research and academic experiences that they might not otherwise have during medical school. This positive introduction has led many physicians-in-training to pursue academic careers in aging, ranging from basic science to clinical research to health services research. They have joined the growing cadre of physicians and scientists whose specialized knowledge and skills are in great demand as our population ages.

Sandler Program for Asthma Research: Research Program
SPAR's mission to develop important new pathways of investigation in basic research on the pathogenesis of asthma. Because the program seeks groundbreaking ideas, outstanding investigators from outside the field of asthma are particularly encouraged to apply. Preliminary results are not required. The application is brief, and there is a quick turnaround time for review. Investigators with prior experience in asthma research are eligible to apply, but they must demonstrate that the proposed work represents a departure from their current and past research. Another important objective of the Program is to promote scientific interaction between Awardees. To faciliate this, an Annual Meeting of Awardees is held.
