New Faculty-Postdoc-Graduate Programs
US Department of Defense: Breast Cancer Concept Award
The Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) is offering Concept Awards to spark new ideas and foster the development of new, innovative, high-risk but potentially high-gain avenues of investigation. This award mechanism provides investigators with the opportunity to pursue serendipitous observations and/or explore untested ideas relevant to breast cancer. Research completed through a Concept Award may provide sufficient preliminary data to enable the investigator to prepare a proposal for future research. As such, preliminary data are not consistent with the intent of this award mechanism. As in prior years, the Concept Awards will have blinded review process; the principal investigator and institution names will not be provided during either peer or programmatic review. These awards are designed for preliminary investigations; therefore, projects involving human subjects or human biological substances will not be supported unless they are exempt under 32 CFR 219.101(b)(4). Concept Awards provide up to $75,000 in direct costs for 1 year, plus indirect costs as appropriate.
Deadlines: 23 January 2007, 6 February 2007
Columbia University Medical Center: Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize
Each year, the Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize has been awarded by Columbia University for outstanding basic research in the fields of biology or biochemistry. The purpose of this prize is to honor a scientific investigator, or group of investigators, whose contributions to knowledge in either of these fields are deemed worthy of special recognition The Prize Committee recognizes no geographical limitations. The prize may be awarded to an individual or a group. When the prize is awarded to a group, the honorarium will be divided among the recipients, and each member will receive a citation. Preference will be given to work done in the recent past. The Prize consists of an honorarium and a citation which are awarded at a special presentation event. Unless otherwise recommended by the Prize Committee, the Prize is awarded annually.
Deadline: 31 January 2007
Civilian Research & Development Foundation: 2007--A Cooperative Grants Program (CGP) Competition
The U.S. Civilian Research & Development Foundation (CRDF) is currently accepting proposals for its Cooperative Grants Program (CGP). The primary goals of the Cooperative Grants Program are to support high-quality, innovative, basic and applied research and development by establishing sustainable U.S.-Eurasian research collaborations, provide an alternative to emigration for Eurasian scientists, and engage and employ former weapons research scientists in civilian research.
Deadline: February 1, 2007
Association of Public Health Laboratories: EID Postdoctoral Laboratory Research Fellowship
This is a one-year fellowship program designed for bachelor's or master's level scientists, with emphasis on the practical application of technologies, methodologies, and practices related to emerging infectious diseases. Applicants must have completed a bachelor's or master's degree in biology, microbiology, biochemistry, virology or a related discipline, or completed an accredited medical technologist program by program initiation. Applicants must be US citizens and must be able to start their appointment at the host laboratory, as well as participate in an orientation session at CDC Atlanta, following the program timeline.
Deadline: 16 February 2007
American Heart Association--Western States Affiliate: Medical Student Research Program--Western States Affiliate
The Medical Student Research Program provides 8-, 10- and 12-week awards (continuous in time) to medical students to carry out cardiovascular-related research in a strong laboratory environment. The intent of the program is to provide medical students who are potentially interested in a research career with an opportunity to explore a research career that is broadly related to the cardiovascular area or stroke. Applicants may propose a preceptor/project at any nonprofit research institution within the Western States Affiliate (California, Nevada, Utah). Please see the Program Description for more information. The deadline for the receipt of applications for the 2006-2007 program is March 6, 2007.
Deadline: March 6, 2007
United Soybean Board: Soy Health Research Program
The United Soybean Board (USB) plans to award 10 incentive grants of $10,000 each to selected researchers for the development of complete research proposals on soy and human health to be submitted to the National Institutes of Health. In addition to welcoming proposals dealing with soy protein, isoflavones, etc., funds have been earmarked for at least (but not limited to) two proposals dealing with soybean oil and human health.
Deadline: 15 March 2007
Human Frontier Science Program: Opportunities For Interdisciplinary Research Program Grants
The HFSP research grant program aims to stimulate novel, daring ideas by supporting collaborative research involving biologists together with scientists from other disciplines such as chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science and engineering. Recent developments in the biological and physical sciences and emerging disciplines such as computational biology and nanoscience open up new approaches to understanding the complex mechanisms underlying biological functions in living organisms.
Deadlines: 22 March 2007, 3 April 2007
Human Frontier Science Program: Opportunities For Interdisciplinary Research Young Investigators Grant
This program is reserved for junior faculty researchers.

American Heart Association--Western States Affiliate: Undergraduate Student Research Program--Western States Affiliate
The Undergraduate Student Research Program is intended to encourage promising students from all disciplines to consider research careers that are broadly related to the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular areas. Students are assigned to leading biomedical research laboratories in California, Nevada, or Utah for a 10-week period during the summer to work under the direct supervision of experienced scientists. Students work on projects ranging from basic molecular research to direct physiological studies. Some opportunities for participation in more clinical investigations are also available. Student awardees will receive a stipend of $4000 for the summer research experience.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD): RISE (Research Internships in Science and Engineering) Program
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)--in cooperation with science organizations in North America and Germany--is pleased to invite undergraduate students from the U.S. and Canada in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering to apply for a summer research internship in Germany. RISE summer placements take place with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany. The RISE interns are matched with a doctoral student whom they assist and who will also serve as their mentor. This program is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology as part of the European Recovery Program (ERP).

The Leadership Alliance SR-EIP, principally for underserved and underrepresented students, offers undergraduates the opportunity to work for eight to ten weeks under the guidance of a faculty or research mentor at a participating Alliance institution. Through this one-on-one collaboration, students gain theoretical knowledge and practical training in academic research and scientific experimentation. SR-EIP is designed to encourage students from groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities, to consider research careers in academia, business, or the public sector. Students are required to present a written report and/or abstract at the end of their summer research activity and to complete a program evaluation. Accepted students receive round-trip travel, room, board and a stipend. The amount of the stipend will vary by institution.
