Department of Defense. Army Research Lab.
Department of Defense (DoD) Autism Spectrum Disorder Research Program (ASDRP) Clinical Partnership Award
The Autism Spectrum Disorder Research Program (ASDRP) Clinical Partnership Award supports the development of translational research collaborations between two independent investigators (faculty level or equivalent) to address a central problem or question in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in a manner that would be less readily achievable through approaches based in a single setting. One partner in the collaboration must be a clinical investigator and the other must be a clinician, and it should be clear that both have had equal intellectual input into the design of the research project. In developing a research plan, the members of the partnership should not view translational research as a one-way continuum from the bench to the bedside. The process of moving an observation forward into clinical application will involve a reciprocal flow of ideas and information within the partnership. Observations that drive a research idea may be derived from a research discovery or from a clinician's firsthand knowledge of patients and anecdotal data. A proposed project in which the clinical partner merely supplies tissue samples or access to patients will not meet the intent of this mechanism. This award is intended to support both new and established clinicians and investigators across a broad spectrum of disciplines in research projects that are likely to make a major impact on ASD. In the interest of this intent, the required preliminary data do not necessarily have to come from the ASD research field. The fiscal year 2007 (FY 07) ASDRP promotes research that will (1) improve clinical outcomes of ASD, (2) lead to better understanding of ASD across the life span of an affected individual, and (3) integrate basic science and clinical observations. The FY 07 ASDRP encourages proposals that specifically address critical needs of the ASD community. The following areas of research are of particular interest to the FY 07 ASDRP: 1. comorbidity (e.g., manifestations such as seizures, tics, or gastrointestinal, sleep, or immune disorders); 2. targets for treating (e.g., clinical, molecular, cellular); 3. biomarkers and pathology (e.g., brain and other tissues); 4. environment (e.g., clinical and basic toxicology, gene/environment interaction); 5. clinical resource development (e.g., biostatistics, tools and resources, research informed by clinical observations, tissue programs). It is the responsibility of the principal investigator to clearly and explicitly articulate the impact the project will have on the field of ASD research.

Department of Energy. National Energy Technology Laboratory
Renewable and Distributed Systems
The announcement seeks applications for the research, development, and demonstration of distribution system configurations with the integration of significant amounts of distributed resources for providing power or load management during peak load periods and for other functions and services. Distributed resources may include distributed generation technologies, renewable energy generation technologies, energy storage technologies, equipment capable of utilizing waste heat, and load curtailed via typical demand response methods. Applications are encouraged to reach the goal of at least a 15% reduction of power that would otherwise normally be supplied by the distribution feeder circuits during peak load periods.
Deadline: 2007-06-19

Department of Energy. National Energy Technology Laboratory
Solid State Lighting - Core Technologies Area of Interest
Applications are sought that address defect reduction and/or mitigation in the epitaxial process. This research includes, but is not limited to, novel growth structures, improved epitaxial growth processes, studies in defect and dopant physics, and studies in the mitigation of defects at high-current operation of LEDs. An additional avenue for research in this area is low-cost, high-quality substrates, which should provide for a reduction in defect density in the epitaxial devices. Demonstrable and quantifiable reduction of defect density, reduction in device efficiency roll-off at high current operation, and improvement of IQE, especially at high current densities, are suggested milestones for the proposed projects to this area. Research in this area should be working toward the 2015 goal of 150 lm/W at 150 A/cm2.
Deadline: 2007-07-10

Department of Health and Human Services. National Institutes of Health
Centers for Research to Reduce Disparities in Oral Health (U54)
This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) solicits applications for Centers for Research to Reduce Disparities in Oral Health (CRRDOH). The purpose of this initiative is to support interventional research that will have a clinically meaningful impact on caries, oral and pharyngeal cancer, and/or periodontal disease, and that will influence clinical practice, health policy, and community and/or individual action and ultimately eliminate disparities in vulnerable subgroups of the U.S. population. These populations include racial and ethnic minorities, low income groups, and persons with special needs. CRRDOH will provide a venue for 1) the establishment of interdisciplinary research teams to conduct studies that emphasize prevention and translation in communities, 2) training and career development of researchers from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, 3) accelerated dissemination and implementation of research findings to benefit health-disparity populations, and 4) development and maintenance of core facilities. Given the complex nature of health disparities research and of multicomponent or consortium organization of the centers, each application must include 1) a Research Program Administrative Center, 2) at least two research projects, and 3) a Statistics and Data Coordinating Center. These distinct components must be submitted as a single package for each complete CRRDOH application. It is expected that the centers will include researchers from a broad range of disciplines. Substantive collaboration between the participating institution(s) and the community(s) is a requirement of this FOA and must be documented in the application.

NIMH intends to commit approximately $450,000 in direct costs in fiscal year 2008 to fund one DCC for a period of up to 5 years. This RFA will use the Cooperative Agreement (U01) award mechanism and runs in conjunction with RFA-MH-08-021, which solicits applications from the four NNTCs. Eligible organizations include: for-profit organizations; nonprofit organizations; public or private institutions, such as universities, colleges, hospitals, and laboratories; units of state and local governments; eligible agencies of the federal government; domestic institutions; foreign institutions; and faith-based or community-based organizations. An eligible organization must be institutionally independent of the current NNTC brain-bank sites. Eligible PIs include individuals with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are always encouraged to apply for NIH support.
