There is much to be gained from industrial experience, Ceccaroni feels, even for those who want an academic career.
"I was offered the two [jobs] because, I think, I gained a lot in maturity; it is what they look for when they say 'you have to go abroad'," says Khodri.
Not only does Barroso find her research fascinating, she also finds it easy to grab the interest of her family and friends when she explains what she does--a rare quality in a scientific job.
"It is better for marketability to be someone considered to have expertise in murine T cell immunology than someone who considers themselves an expert on how to protect a mouse from anthrax," says Altmann.
Azevedo strongly advises other postdocs to start applying even if they feel it is too early in their career.
"It is important that the maximum feedback or spinoff is obtained in case of the failure of a mission," says Dr. Mark Sims, Beagle 2 mission manager.
