The list is distilled from various sources and is by no means exhaustive. The National Science Scholarships

The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR, a sponsor of Next Wave Singapore) offers the National Science Scholarships (NSS) to Singapore's top students to study either at local or selected overseas universities. These awards are also available to overseas Ph.D. students and postdoctoral fellows who wish to pursue research studies in Singapore.

There are four different kinds of awards, research scholarships, local graduate scholarships, overseas graduate scholarships, and international fellowships. We'll look at each one in turn.

The Research Scholarship supports both undergraduate and postgraduate studies up to the Ph.D. level at selected overseas universities. This scholarship also extends support for combined MBBS-Ph.D. programmes. Open to Singaporeans and Singapore Permanent Residents with at least three distinctions in relevant 'A' level subjects, successful candidates will be supported in their academic pursuits for up to 8 years, leading to a Ph.D. degree. Candidates for the MBBS-Ph.D. track should have a good honors degree in biomedical science or biomedical engineering. Alternatively, they should be current medical undergraduates of the National University of Singapore (NUS) or an approved overseas medical school and should have completed at least 2 years of preclinical training.

The award includes full tuition fees; an annual book and conference allowance; a monthly sustenance allowance; annual return airfares; allowance for computer, clothing, and settling-in; and a monthly overseas allowance, where applicable. Upon completion, candidates must return to Singapore to contribute to the various research institutions, universities, hospitals, or industries in Singapore for at least 5 to 6 years.

The Local Graduate Scholarship supports local postgraduate research studies in science, engineering, and biomedical science, including associated overseas attachments. Open to local and international applicants with a first or second upper class honors degree or a GPA of 3.8 and above in relevant disciplines, successful candidates will be supported for up to 5 years of postgraduate studies, including up to 2 years of overseas attachment.

The award covers full tuition fees, computer allowance, annual book and conference allowance, monthly sustenance allowance, monthly overseas allowance, and annual return airfares, where applicable. Upon completion, candidates must return to contribute to the various research institutions, universities, hospitals, or industries in Singapore for a maximum of 3 years.

The Overseas Graduate Scholarship offers support for postgraduate research studies in various science, engineering, and biomedical science disciplines at selected overseas universities. Open to Singaporeans and Singapore Permanent Residents with a first or upper second class honors degree or a GPA of 3.8 and above in relevant disciplines, candidates should have gained or be in the process of gaining admission into a selected overseas university. Successful candidates will be supported for up to 5 years of postgraduate studies.

The award includes full tuition fees; an annual book and conference allowance; a monthly sustenance allowance; a monthly overseas allowance; annual return airfare; and computer, warm clothing, and settling-in allowances. Upon completion, candidates must return to Singapore to contribute to the various research institutions, universities, hospitals, and industries for 4 years.

The International Fellowship (Category I) supports local (Singaporeans or Singapore Permanent Residents) postgraduate students/postdoctoral fellows who are currently pursuing research in top institutions overseas. The International Fellowship (Category II) supports research scientists and engineers working in Singapore's research institutions, universities, and hospitals for overseas research attachment and training.

Candidates for both categories should possess excellent publication records and should not be holders of any other scholarship from Singapore. In addition, candidates for Category II have to apply for the fellowship through their research institutes/centres, universities, and hospitals and secure a research position in the overseas organization on his/her own.

The award covers sustenance allowance, (US$12,000 or US$24,000 per annum for Category I or S$36,000 per annum for Category II), return airfares, and conference support. Service commitment to Singapore is 1 year for Category I candidates receiving US$24,000 per annum; the duration of the service commitment for Category II candidates is stipulated by the sponsoring institute.

The Singapore Millennium Scholarships

The Singapore Millennium Foundation, a nonprofit charitable organization created to promote and advance scientific progress in Singapore, offers Singapore Millennium Scholarships to outstanding young predoctoral and postdoctoral research scientists and engineers in selected scientific disciplines of strategic importance to Singapore's economy and national development.

Open to both local and international applicants, candidates must be graduate students who are currently enrolled in or intend to study in a Singapore-based university or research institute or recent doctoral degree recipients. All predoctoral applicants must have been enrolled in a graduate program in Singapore by the activation date of the scholarships. Similarly, applicants for postgraduate scholarships must have received acceptance into a Ph.D., M.D., D.D.S., D.M.D., Sc.D., Dr.P.H., D.Pharm., or equivalent doctoral degree from a domestic tertiary institution by then.

The award includes a monthly stipend of S$2000, S$3000, and S$5000 for M.Sc., Ph.D., and postdoctoral training, respectively. A special travel allowance of up to S$2000 may be provided to assist international doctoral and postdoctoral scholars to cover travel costs to Singapore.

The National University of Singapore Research Scholarships

NUS awards Research Scholarships to outstanding local and international graduates for research leading to a higher degree at the University. Candidates must have a first or upper second class honors degree or an equivalent qualification.

The scholarship carries a monthly stipend of S$1500 and a full research fee subsidy. An additional stipend of up to S$500 per month may be awarded to selected candidates under an augmentation scheme sponsored by industry and professional bodies. Research scholars may also assist in departmental work, for which they can earn up to S$16,000 (gross) per annum at the current rate of remuneration.

The award, tenable for 1 year in the first instance, is renewable annually, subject to satisfactory progress. The maximum period of award is 2 years for master degree candidates and 3 years for Ph.D. candidates.

The Nanyang Technological University Overseas Scholarships

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) offers the Overseas Scholarship to graduates intending to pursue Ph.D. studies in accountancy/business, communication studies, computer engineering/science, engineering or materials engineering in renowned overseas universities.

Open to Singaporeans and Permanent Residents of Singapore, candidates must have obtained first class honors degrees (or their equivalent) in any of the specified disciplines and be less than 28 years old. The scholarship includes return airfare; a monthly maintenance allowance; tuition and other approved fees; and book, thesis, warm clothing, and excess baggage allowances.

The award is tenable for a maximum period of 3 years. Extension to a fourth year is possible for studies at a U.S. university on a case-by-case basis. Upon graduation, scholars are expected to take up an academic career at NTU and will be required to enter into a bond to serve the university for a period of 5 years upon obtaining their Ph.D. degree.

The Nanyang Technological University Research Scholarships

NTU also provides Research Scholarships to candidates with outstanding academic records to enable them to pursue research for higher degrees on a full-time basis at NTU. Open to local and international applicants, candidates must have a first class or upper second class honors degree or its equivalent.

The Research Scholarship carries a monthly stipend of between S$1400 and S$1500. In addition, the award also covers the annual research fee, a computer fee, and the examination fee. Tenable for 1 year in the first instance, the award is renewable every year, subject to the scholar's satisfactory progress. The maximum period of the scholarship is 2 years for a master's degree candidate and 3 years for a Ph.D. candidate.

Scholars may be required to assist the school in teaching duties for not more than 10 hours a week, for which they will be remunerated at such rates as may be determined by the university.

EDB Postgraduate Manpower Programme (Research)

The Singapore Economic Development Board's (EDB, a sponsor of Next Wave Singapore) Postgraduate Manpower Programme (Research), a joint Singapore-based industry-university programme, sponsors high-calibre students from good universities to perform their master's and Ph.D. research at NTU in disciplines or research areas relevant to the sponsoring company's needs.

Open to local and international applicants, candidates should have an undergraduate degree from NTU, NUS, or any top overseas university and must meet NTU's admissions criteria for the respective research degree programme and its Research Scholarship standard. The proposed area of research or study should match the sponsoring company's requirements.

The award covers a 2-year sponsorship for master degree studies or a 3-year sponsorship to pursue a Ph.D. Sponsorship includes a waiver of research fees by NTU, a monthly stipend of S$500--on top of the S$1400 to S$1500 provided by NTU's Research Scholarship--a book and equipment allowance of S$600 per annum, and a one-time settling-in allowance of S$500 for international students relocating to Singapore.

The sponsoring company will offer students a job in the company's Singapore operations. Scholars will be required to serve in their sponsoring companies for a period of 2 years (for master degree candidates) or 3 years (for Ph.D. candidates) upon completion of their studies.

EDB Scholarships, Research Training, and Attachment Programmes

EDB also offers numerous industry-based scholarships for diverse undergraduate and postgraduate courses in science, engineering, and information technology, many of which cover research-based courses. It also sponsors various industry-based, on-the-job research training and attachment programmes of 12 to 18 months duration.
