Courses and Training

North America

Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training ( IGERT) programs are available across the U.S. in a wide range of multidisciplinary areas such as the IGERT in Geographic Information Science at the University of Buffalo, New York, Subsurface Biosphere Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program at Oregon and Portland State Universities, and Optical Molecular Bio Engineering at the University of Texas, Austin.

The Interdisciplinary Training in Primary Health Care Research program at the University of Western Ontario, Canada, is open to mid-career clinicians, postdoctoral fellows, MD residents doing research fellowships, graduate students, and outstanding undergraduate students.

The National Institute for Nanotechnology has training opportunities for some 275 graduate and postdoctoral researchers in physics, chemistry, engineering, biology, informatics, pharmacy, and medicine.

Want to pursue your own unique interdisciplinary area of study? Then consider a do-it-yourself graduate degree under the auspices of the Individual Interdisciplinary Studies Graduate Program at the University of British Columbia. A similar program runs at the University of Ottawa.

Asia

The Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Science and Engineering at the Tokyo Institute of Technology

Europe

The Interdisciplinary Research Masters Degree in The Science and Engineering of Materials based at the School of Engineering, University of Birmingham, UK, is open to graduates in physics, chemistry, mathematics, metallurgy, materials science, or any engineering discipline. EPSRC sponsorships and university bursaries are available.

The International Space University based in Strasbourg, France, is offering 2-months' experience or a Master of Space Studies.

Well, that was a taste of what is available to you. Now, if you want to track down a graduate programme in any part of the world and in any key area of science, you might want to use the Gradschools.com search tool.

Funding

North America

The National Science Foundation is offering funding for multidisciplinary research projects.

The New York State Office of Science, Technology and Academic Research maintains a list of funding opportunities.

Europe

Although the Discipline Hopping Award is the most widely known, it is far from being the only funding that the MRC, BBSRC, EPSRC, NERC, and PPARC are offering jointly to multidisciplinary researchers.

The Deutsche Forshungsgemeinshaft in Germany also offers grants to support interdisciplinary research. Click here for an English version.

The CNRS in France is funding and coordinating interdisciplinary programmes in its areas of interest.
