New Faculty-Postdoc-Graduate Programs
American Federation for Aging Research: 2007 Paul Beeson Career Development
The 2007 Paul Beeson Career Development Awards in Aging Research Program--Extension to the Island of Ireland. The initiative offers 3-year faculty development awards to outstanding junior physician faculty committed to academic careers in aging-related research, teaching, and practice. One award will be made in 2007.
Deadline: March 21, 2007
American Astronomical Society: Solar Physics Division Popular Writing Awards
The Solar Physics Division (SPD) of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) holds an annual competition for two Popular Writing Awards to be awarded to authors of popular or semipopular articles on the sun or its effects on the Earth's environment. The purpose of these awards is to encourage scientists, science writers, and journalists to write about the sun and thereby educate and excite the public about solar research. Awards will be made in two categories, one for scientists (students, professionals, and retired) and another for science writers and journalists. One award will be offered in each category. Any living scientist, science writer, or journalist not currently serving on the panel is eligible to receive the award without consideration of race, sex, or nationality (SPD or AAS membership not required). Awards will be made for articles which are published the previous calendar year and which, in the judgement of the selection committee, best communicate the results from contemporary scientific studies of the sun and heliosphere. The articles will be judged based on the following criteria: relevance of the article to solar astronomy or solar physics, or space physics directly associated with the sun; educational value; accuracy in describing the scientific issues involved; clarity of presentation; and number of readers who would likely have seen the article. The article must be in English, and must have been published in a North American newspaper, magazine, or popular science journal. Books, book chapters, and electronic publications are not eligible.
Deadline: March 31, 2007
EMBO: EMBO Installation Grants
EMBO Installation Grants help qualified life scientists to establish laboratories in a member state of EMBC, EMBO's intergovernmental funding body. Currently Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Poland, Portugal, and Turkey are participating in the scheme and other countries have indicated an interest to join in the near future. The aim of the scheme is to stimulate research in the participating member states. The grants are entirely funded by these countries and successful applicants will receive an annual grant of 50,000 euro for 3 to 5 years. The grants help the scientists to relocate, set up their labs, and rapidly establish a reputation in the European scientific community. Grantees will also benefit from full participation in the networking activities of the EMBO Young Investigator Programme. Eligible candidates should have spent a minimum of 2 continuous years outside the country in which they wish to set up their labs and must commit to a full-time position at the receiving institute.
Deadline: April 15, 2007
Eppendorf AG & Science Magazine: The Eppendorf & Science Prize for Neurobiology
The prize is awarded annually to one young scientist for the most outstanding neurobiological research based on methods of molecular and cell biology conducted by him/her during the past 3 years, as described in a 1000-word entrance essay. The grand prizewinner of the Eppendorf and Science Prize for Neurobiology is selected along with up to three finalists by an independent board of scientists that is chaired by the Editor-in-Chief of Science. The winner is awarded $25,000. This is a personal gift. The grand prizewinner's essay is published in Science and on Science Online. Furthermore, the winner receives a free, 5-year subscription to Science and Science Online and approximately $1000 in free Eppendorf products.
Deadline: June 15, 2007
Burroughs Wellcome Fund: Clinical Scientist Awards in Translational Research
The Clinical Scientist Awards in Translational Research program supports established independent physician-scientists who are dedicated to translational research--the two-way transfer between work at the laboratory bench and patient care. The program is intended to help protect award recipients' time to pursue the vital link between basic and clinical research. Importantly, the program aims to identify and reward proven mentors and to increase their capacity to train the next generation of investigators skilled in translational research. In this way, BWF hopes to increase the ranks of experienced physician-scientists critically positioned to bridge the gap between bench and bedside.
Deadline: August 15, 2007
Burroughs Wellcome Fund: Career Awards for Medical Scientists
The Career Awards for Medical Scientists (CAMS) addresses the on-going problem of increasing the number of physician scientists and keeping them in research. BWF believes that this bridging award, supporting the last year(s) of a mentored position in addition to supporting the beginning years of an independent position, will facilitate the transition to a career in research and buy time from service commitments. CAMS program provides $700,000 over 5 years to bridge advanced postdoctoral/fellowship training and the early years of faculty service.
Deadline: October 1, 2007
Burroughs Wellcome Fund: Investigators in Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease
BWF's Investigators in Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease program is designed to incorporate elements of previously funded areas of research and to focus primarily on the interaction of pathogens with their human hosts. Taking advantage of recent developments in genomics, immunology, and other areas, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund's new Investigators in Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease program provides an opportunity to bring aggressive, multidisciplinary approaches to investigating infectious disease.

Undergraduate Programs
University of Houston Innovations in Nanotechnology: Innovations in Nanotechnology
The Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program "Innovations in Nanotechnology" at the University of Houston in Texas is seeking applications for the summer 2007 program. Participants will be mentored in many aspects of research, including laboratory techniques, electronic literature searches, and written and oral communication of results. Participants will be encouraged to publish their results.

Summer in Biomedical Science University of Alabama at Birmingham: Summer in Biomedical Science (SIBS) Undergraduate Research Program
The Summer in Biomedical Science (SIBS) Undergraduate Research Program will provide the opportunity for young people to be instructed in the techniques of modern biology while becoming integrated members of a vibrant clinical and scientific community. Ten students who will be sophomore or junior level college undergraduates in March 2007 will be accepted into an 8-week paid summer program (June 1, 2007 through July 27, 2007) to work with faculty members on mentored research projects.
Deadline: March 15, 2007
Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL): Summer Research Program
The summer research program offers intensive summer research training opportunities to undergraduate students interested in research careers in the life sciences. We seek to attract the best candidates and thus financial compensation will be provided to cover successful candidates' living and travel expenses. Selection Criteria: The summer research fellowships will be awarded on a competitive basis, taking into consideration several criteria including the student's academic record, personal statement and letters of recommendation.
