DOD Gulf War Investigator-Initiated Research Awards

The Investigator-Initiated Research Awards support research focusing on the complex of symptoms known as Gulf War Illness (GWI), improving its diagnosis, and better understanding its pathobiology. It is intended to encourage basic or clinical developmental research aimed at identification of objective measures to distinguish ill from healthy veterans (e.g., biomarkers), or elucidate potential treatment targets for GWI. Studies that characterize chronic effects of neurotoxic exposures encountered during the Gulf War (and at comparable dosage) are also acceptable. The Gulf War Illness Research Program also seeks proposals that can contribute toward improved diagnostic testing for GWI and/or improved understanding of its pathobiology. Deadline: 2009-07-17, 2009-09-09

DOD Gulf War Illness Innovative Treatment Evaluation Award

The Department of Defense Gulf War Illness Research Program (GWIRP) Investigator-Initiated Research Awards support research focusing on the complex of symptoms known as Gulf War Illness (GWI), improving its diagnosis, and better understanding its pathobiology. GWIRP also seeks proposals that can contribute to improved diagnostic testing for GWI and/or improved understanding of its pathobiology. Deadline: 2009-07-17, 2009-09-09

DOD Gulf War Illness Clinical Trial Awards

The Gulf War Illness Research Program (GWIRP) Clinical Trial Awards support rapid execution of clinical trials with the potential to have a significant impact on the health and lives of veterans with Gulf War Illness (GWI). GWIRP seeks proposals that will contribute to identification of effective interventions for GWI. This will include larger, more definitive clinical trials of studies for which preliminary and preclinical evidence indicates the potential for substantial benefit for veterans with GWI. Deadline: 2009-06-17, 2009-09-09

Department of Defense.

Efficient Linearized All-Silicon Transmitters ICs (ELASTx)

The Defense Advance Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting innovative research and development proposals in the area of efficient linearized all-silicon transmitter integrated circuits. The goal of this program is to enable monolithic, ultra high power efficiency, ultra high linearity, millimeter-wave, silicon-based transmitter integrated circuits for next-generation military microsystems in areas such as radar and communications. DARPA envisions that this goal will be achieved by investigating and developing complex, silicon-enabled radio frequency, analog, and mixed-signal circuit-design techniques. All administrative correspondence and questions on this solicitation, including requests for information on how to submit a proposal abstract or full proposal, should be directed to DARPA-BAA-09-36@darpa.mil. Deadline: 2009-06-09

Department of Defense.

DOD Gulf War Illness Innovative Treatment Evaluation Award

The Department of Defense Gulf War Illness Research Program (GWIRP) Innovative Treatment Evaluation Awards are intended to evaluate a broad scope of treatment approaches with the potential for widespread, cost-effective application for GWI. Treatment approaches may include pharmacologic or other physiological interventions, including either conventional or complementary treatments, or combinations of these approaches. A variety of experimental and nonexperimental study designs are acceptable under this award mechanism. Projects of interest include innovative treatment approaches currently in clinical use that have not been systematically evaluated for effectiveness in treating GWI but may have been evaluated in conditions with similarities to GWI. Also of interest are interventions based on biological alterations identified in veterans with GWI. Thus, GWIRP will accept proposals not only for early pilot clinical trials supported by preliminary data but also for those based on sound scientific rationale without support from preliminary data. Deadline: 2009-06-17; 2009-09-09

Rapid Assessment Post-Impact of Disaster (R03)

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to provide a rapid funding mechanism for research on the post-impact of disasters in order to permit access to a disaster area in the immediate aftermath of the event. Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to contact National Institutes of Mental Health program staff before submitting a Rapid Assessment Post-Impact of Disaster application to determine whether the proposed work meets the guidelines of this program, whether requested RAPID funding is likely to be available, and whether the idea should be considered for initial submission as a fully developed application. The RAPID grants described in this FOA are designed to provide a limited sum of money for early assessment to investigators who intend to follow up with a full research application, using the preliminary data from this initial effort as a basis for their larger application. Deadline: 2009-06-22

Pilot Intervention and Services Research Grants (R34)

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to encourage research on (1) the development and/or pilot testing of new or adapted interventions, (2) the adaptation and/or pilot testing of interventions with demonstrated efficacy for use in broader scale effectiveness trials, or (3) innovative services research directions that require preliminary testing or development. The R34 award mechanism provides resources for evaluating the feasibility, tolerability, acceptability, and safety of novel approaches to improving mental health and modifying health risk behavior, and for obtaining the preliminary data needed as a prerequisite to a larger-scale (efficacy or effectiveness) intervention or services study. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) intervention and services research is aimed at preventing or ameliorating mental disorders; emotional or behavioral problems; the co-occurrence of mental, physical, and substance abuse problems; HIV infections; and the functional consequences of these problems across the life span. Mechanism of Support: This FOA will utilize the NIMH R34 award mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards: Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. Deadline: 2009-06-16; 2009-10-16

SSA Financial Literacy Research Consortium

We are announcing the solicitation of applications for a cooperative agreement to compete for a Financial Literacy Research Consortium (FLRC), Section 1110 of the Act, 42 U.S.C. 1310. We seek applications in support of the FLRC that will serve as a national resource fostering innovative R&D on how to encourage savings through greater financial literacy, being cognizant that Social Security income is a fundamental source of retirement savings for many, and thus a cornerstone of our involvement. The FLRC may consist of up to two research centers. The Consortiums purpose is to benefit the public through research, development, and evaluation. We expect the FLRC to plan, initiate, and maintain a multidisciplinary R&D program of high quality. This R&D will result primarily in educational products that encourage savings and effective retirement planning, including planning for the key decisions around retirement timing and benefit receipt. It may also result in research-based recommendations on the architecture or structure of programs or mechanisms that encourage use of public and private sector savings plans. Deadline: 2009-06-06
