New Research Funding Programs

CSL Behring.

U.S.-Based Hemophilia Treatment Centers

The foundation is accepting grant applications from U.S.-based hemophilia treatment centers, from nonprofit organizations such as hemophilia foundations, chapters, and associations, and from health care professionals dedicated to the treatment of people with bleeding disorders. Grants are awarded in three primary categories: (1) research grants for scientific, educational, social, and/or epidemiological projects; (2) patient grants to hemophilia foundations, chapters, associations, and/or other not-for-profit organizations for innovative programs that address the needs of the bleeding-disorders community; and (3) unrestricted grants to assist small, community-based organizations in delivering their services. All projects must be conducted in the United States, unless there is a specific reason why work must be conducted in whole or in part outside the United States, e.g., a cross-cultural study. Deadline: 2009-07-31

Department of Agriculture.

Small Business Innovation Research Program - Phase I

The purpose of the Small Business Innovation Research program is to provide an opportunity for U.S.-owned, for-profit, small business firms to submit innovative, applied, research and development projects that address important problems facing American agriculture and have the potential to lead to significant public benefit if the research is successful. Research proposals are accepted in any of the following topic areas: (1) forests and related resources; (2) plant production and protection-biology; (3) animal production and protection; 4) air, water, and soils; (5) food science and nutrition; (6) rural development; (7) aquaculture; (8) biofuels and biobased products; (9) marketing and trade; (10) animal manure management; (11) small and midsize farms; and (12) plant production and protection-engineering. Each applicant submitting an application must qualify as a small-business concern at the time of award. Deadline: 2009-09-03

Department of Defense.

Fundamentals of Cyberspace and Software

The Office of Naval Research is interested in receiving proposals for basic scientific research that will forge major advances in software, software engineering, networks, cyber-physical systems, social networks, and critical infrastructures, all of which are profoundly interrelated. The research supported under this program will address new and emerging challenges for the future naval information infrastructure, which is expected to be a federated enterprise that is highly mobile, extremely heterogeneous, dynamic, nonstop, large-scale, globally connected, supporting world-wide operations, and operating over many different networks. This infrastructure is vast and extends across networks of interacting systems, defined as cyber-physical systems for the purposes of this broad agency announcement. Deadline: 2009-08-27

NHLBI Systems Biology Collaborations (R01)

This funding opportunity announcement issued by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health, encourages Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions/organizations that propose collaborative systems biology research projects by multidisciplinary teams to advance our understanding of normal physiology and perturbations associated with heart, lung, blood, and sleep diseases and disorders. Multidisciplinary expertise across experimental and computational domains is required and the multiprincipal investigator mechanism is allowed, as integration across these domains is a critical element of the proposed research plan. Deadline: 2009-08-14; 2009-12-14; 2010-08-14; 2010-12-14

Exploratory Grant Award to Promote Workforce Diversity in Basic Cancer Research (R21)

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) invites applications from investigators from diverse populations with interests in research projects focused on the basic biology of cancer. The National Institutes of Health recognizes a unique and compelling need to promote diversity in the basic biology of cancer research workforce. The purpose of this FOA is to improve the diversity of the research workforce by supporting and recruiting eligible investigators from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented. This initiative will also provide a bridge to investigators that have completed their training and may need extra time to develop a full RO1 proposal. Deadline: 2009-10-23, 2010-05-23, 2010-10-23, 2011-05-23. Letters of intent receipt dates: 23 October 2009; 23 May 2010; 23 October 2010; 23 May 2011. Application due dates: 23 November 2009; 23 June 2010; 23 November 2010; 23 June 2011

Environmental Protection Agency.

Clean Air Research Centers

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is seeking proposals for integrated, multidisciplinary research centers that will advance understanding air pollution and human health effects. EPA is interested in supporting research on the health effects of exposure to particulate matter, ozone, and other air pollutants, both singly and in multipollutant atmospheres. Deadline: 2009-11-16

Human Frontier Science Program.

Long-term Fellowships

The Human Frontier Science Program offers fellowships for basic research training in the life sciences across national and scientific boundaries. We invite applications for international programs that support postdoctoral investigators who explore new research areas. Long-term fellowships are reserved for applicants with a Ph.D. in a biological discipline who want to embark on a new project in a different field of the life sciences. Preference is given to applicants who propose an original study in biology that marks a departure from their previous Ph.D. or postdoctoral work so as to learn new methods or change study system. Deadline: 2009-08-27. 27 August 2009: Preregistration (for obtaining a password) and for initializing an application. 10 September 2009: Submission deadline for Long-Term Fellowships.

Human Frontier Science Program.

Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships

The Human Frontier Science Program offers fellowships for basic research training in the life sciences across national and scientific boundaries. We invite applications for international programs that support postdoctoral investigators who explore new research areas. Cross-disciplinary fellowships are open to applicants with a Ph.D. from outside the life sciences, e.g., in physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, or computer sciences, who have had limited exposure to biology during their previous training. Deadline: 2009-08-27. 27 August 2009: Preregistration (for obtaining a password) and for initializing an application. 10 September 2009: Submission deadline for Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships
