The Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research
The Lewis and Clark Fund (initially supported by a benefaction from the late Stanford Ascherman, M.D., of San Francisco) encourages exploratory field studies for the collection of specimens and data and to provide the imaginative stimulus that accompanies direct observation. Applications are invited from disciplines with a large dependence on field studies, such as archeology, anthropology, biology, ecology, geography, geology, and paleontology, but grants will not be restricted to these fields. Library Resident Research Fellowship
The American Philosophical Society Library offers short-term residential fellowships for conducting research in its collections. The society's library, located near Independence Hall in Philadelphia, is a leading international center for research in the history of science; technology; medicine; biochemistry; physiology; biophysics, including 20th century medical research; eugenics; genetics; evolution; physics, especially quantum physics; 18th and 19th century natural history; and the history of Western scientific expeditions and travel. The library houses more than 8 million manuscripts, 250,000 volumes and bound periodicals, and thousands of maps and prints. Its holdings include the papers of Charles Darwin and his forerunners, colleagues, critics, and successors as well as the journals of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. The library does not hold materials on philosophy in the modern sense. Deadline: 2010-03-01

Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research in Astrobiology
Astrobiology is the study of the origin, evolution, distribution, and future of life on Earth and in the universe. It encompasses research in, among other fields, astronomy, chemistry, evolutionary biology, field and population biology, geology, microbiology, molecular biology, oceanography, paleontology, and planetary science. Astrobiology includes investigations of the geologic and fossil records to understand the conditions of early Earth when life arose. Its scope also includes research of contemporary locations on Earth that might be similar to early Earth and to environments elsewhere in our solar system (such as on Mars, Europa, and Titan), which may be, or have been, suitable for life. Astrobiology is also about understanding the characteristics of life, which requires investigations into extreme natural environments on Earth and, eventually, elsewhere. Deadline: 2010-02-01

Short-range Wide-field-of-view Extremely-agile Electronically-steered Photonic EmitteR (SWEEPER)
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting innovative research and development proposals in the area of short-range, wide-field-of-view, extremely-agile, electronically-steered photonic emitters (SWEEPER). The overall goal is to create a paradigm shift in active optical beam steering and sensing by developing chip-scale integrated photonic coherent beam-forming technologies that overcome the limits of opto-mechanical and electro-optical systems while being constrained to a small size, weight, and power (SWaP). DARPA envisions that a successful SWEEPER program will establish photonic integrated circuit technology that will provide video frame rate beam steering speeds and emit multiple beams with a total output power of 10 W. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting innovative medical therapeutic research proposals in two areas: soldier protection and biodefense. Proposed research should investigate innovative approaches and revolutionary advances in science, devices, and/or systems. In recent years, global surveillance networks have determined that the frequency and diversity with which new infectious microorganisms are emerging is increasing. Although these increases are in part due to better reporting, there are multiple examples demonstrating that this increase is promulgated by changes in natural systems and potentially the activities of humans. Examples of factors implicated in the increase in new, emerging, and re-emerging pathogens include: increased animal-human interface; increased population densities and co-location of vulnerable species with pathogen reservoirs; climate change, particularly affecting migration and spread of vectors; and narrowing of genetic diversity among food animal stocks. The expansion of biomedical technologies on the global stage is also suspected to increase the risk of orthogonal and highly diverse microorganisms. One growing concern is the potential risk posed by the proliferation of genetic engineering technologies that can be easily redirected from beneficent to offensive purposes or for covert biological industrial sabotage of food animals. Together, these natural-occurring and synthetic threat agents challenge current detection methods and could possibly defeat traditional medical countermeasures. No group is at greater risk of exposure to new international pathogens, to biosabotage of food supply lines, or of attack from biological threat agents than is the U. S. military. DARPA/Defense Sciences Office is soliciting research proposals that seek to develop highly innovative approaches to counter any known, unknown, naturally occurring, or engineered pathogen. Proposed research will investigate novel technologies to prevent infection, extend survival until a curative response is available, provide transient immunity, or speed the onset of adaptive immunity. Methods proposed should not require prior knowledge of the pathogen and should be broadly applicable to multiple unrelated infectious agents. Deadline: 2010-06-21

DOD Gulf War Illness Innovative Treatment Evaluation Award
The Department of Defense Gulf War Illness Research Program (GWIRP) Innovative Treatment Evaluation Awards are intended to evaluate a broad scope of treatment approaches with potential for widespread, cost-effective application for GWI. Treatment approaches may include pharmacologic or other physiological interventions, including either conventional or complementary treatments, or combinations of these approaches. A variety of experimental and nonexperimental study designs are acceptable under this award mechanism. Projects of interest include innovative treatment approaches currently in clinical use that have not been systematically evaluated for effectiveness in treating GWI but may have been evaluated in conditions with similarities to GWI. Also of interest are interventions based on biological alterations identified in veterans with GWI. Thus, GWIRP will accept proposals not only for early pilot clinical trials supported by preliminary data but also for those based on sound scientific rationale without support from preliminary data. Deadline: 2009-09-09

DOD Gulf War Illness Clinical Trial Awards
The Department of Defense Gulf War Illness Research Program (GWIRP) Clinical Trial Awards support larger, more definitive (Phase II-III) clinical trials of studies in which preliminary and preclinical evidence indicates the potential for substantial benefit for veterans with GWI. GWIRP seeks proposals that will contribute to identification of effective interventions for GWI. Health outcomes of interest include effects of interventions on: (1) global health measures, functional status; (2) symptom complexes (e.g., cognitive function, musculoskeletal/pain symptoms, gastrointestinal symptoms, fatigue, respiratory problems, skin abnormalities) individually and as they may interact with each other; (3) measurable clinical outcomes, biomarkers; and (4) GWI subgroups characterized by symptom or other clinical characteristics Deadline: 2009-09-09
