Pancreatic Cancer Action Network-AACR Pathway to Leadership Grant
The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network-AACR Pathway to Leadership Grant represents a joint effort to ensure the future leadership of pancreatic cancer research by supporting outstanding early-career investigators beginning in their postdoctoral research positions and continuing through their successful transition to independence. Applicants must be in the first 5 years of their postdoctoral or clinical research fellowships at the time of application (i.e., they must have started their fellowship on or after 2 July 2005) and not already have a full-time tenure track assistant professor position (or equivalent). The Pathway to Leadership Grant will provide up to 5 years of support, for a total of $600,000, consisting of two phases. The initial mentored phase lasts up to 2 years, during which time recipients will receive $75,000 per year and are expected to work closely with mentors to develop their research. During the subsequent 3 years, recipients are expected to be in independent research positions and will be funded at $150,000 per year. Mentored Phase: This initial phase of mentored support will allow the candidate time to complete research, publish results, and prepare to bridge to an independent research position. As part of the application, the candidate must propose a research project and career-development plan to pursue during the mentored phase. Funds will support the grantee's salary and research expenses for up to 2 years during their postdoctoral or clinical research fellowship. The candidate and mentor together will be responsible for all aspects of the mentored research and career-development program. An individual may submit an application from a sponsoring institution/organization that has a research program in pancreatic cancer research as well as the faculty, facilities, and resources to support the proposed research endeavor. The individual must select an appropriate mentor with a track record of funded research related to pancreatic cancer research and experience as a supervisor and mentor. The sponsoring institution must ensure that the candidate has the protected time needed to conduct the proposed research. It is expected that the recipient will dedicate at least 75% of his/her time to completing the work included in the proposal. Independent Phase: As part of the application, the candidate must propose a pancreatic cancer research project that will be pursued as an independent investigator during the second phase of the grant. Candidates may request $150,000 of support per year, for up to 3 years following the mentored phase, to transition as an independent scientist to the sponsoring institution/organization to which the individual has been recruited. This support will allow the individual to continue to work toward establishing his/her own independent research program in pancreatic cancer research and progress along the path to leadership within this critical field. Support for the independent phase, however, is not automatic and is contingent upon several factors, including being accepted by an institution and the successful scientific review of the individual's mentored phase of the grant. Grant recipients are expected to apply for additional independent research grant support during the independent phase of the award. It is anticipated that one Pathway to Leadership Grant will be funded.Deadline: 2009-10-28

Dynamics-Enabled Frequency Sources (DEFYS)
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is soliciting innovative research proposals in the area of dynamics-enabled frequency sources. The research goal is the development of compact frequency sources capable of maintaining low phase noise under high accelerations or vibrations and over a wide temperature range. Oscillator phase noise ultimately limits capabilities of electronics in a wide range of both military and civilian applications. Effected systems often use a reference oscillator and any noise in this frequency source will translate into a reduction of overall performance. Current high-performance frequency sources can be expensive and are based on technologies with size, weight, and power requirements that demand large platforms or exotic packaging and compensation. Reducing these requirements would enable a number of breakthroughs by facilitating the use of high-performance sources in the broader set of applications for which resources are limited. Due to the degree of maturity of current high-performance frequency sources, it is expected that meeting the goals of this solicitation will require an alternative architecture based on a nanoscale oscillator. At this length scale, the dynamic range for linear behavior shrinks to the point that nonlinearity and noise become unavoidable device characteristics. The traditional views of both nonlinear behavior and noise as undesirable suggests that moving to the nanoscale is a poor option to address the high-performance frequency challenge. However, recent advances in both nonlinear science and nano-engineering suggest that nonlinearity and noise can be exploited to surpass traditional performance limits and yield frequency sources with an unprecedented phase-noise capability per unit device volume. EDMAP - The Educational Component of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program
The primary objective of the Educational Component of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP) is to train the next generation of geologic mappers. To do this, NCGMP provides funds for graduate and selected undergraduate students in academic research projects that involve geologic mapping as a major component. Through these cooperative agreements, NCGMP hopes to expand the research and educational capacity of academic programs that teach earth science students the techniques of geologic mapping and field-data analysis. Another important goal is to increase the level of communication between the nation's geologic surveys (both State Geological Surveys and the United States Geological Survey-USGS) and geologic mappers in the academic community. We hope that this improved communication will have two results: (1) that the academic mapping community will learn more about the societal needs that drive geologic mapping projects at USGS and State Geologic Surveys, and (2) more geologic maps produced in academia will eventually be made available to the public.Deadline: 2009-11-12
