Special Project Discovery Grant
The American Brain Tumor Association announces a new Special Project Discovery Grant program to support high-risk/high-impact projects that have the potential to change current diagnostic or treatment paradigms for either adult or pediatric brain tumors. This pilot program offers up to 1-year grants not to exceed $50,000 each in direct costs. Investigators from sciences outside traditional tumor biology fields are encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to proposals addressing under-funded areas of brain tumor research. To invite diversity of topic and discovery, "under-funded" is left undefined for this pilot program but must be defended in the letter of intent. Of particular interest for this first round of funding are proposals into meningioma or oligodendroglioma, but other research topics are also invited. Deadline: 2009-10-15

FY09 DOD Lung Cancer Biospecimen Resource Network Award
The Lung Cancer Research Program, Lung Cancer Biospecimen Resource Network (LCBRN) Award is intended to provide infrastructure support for the development of a lung cancer biospecimen resource that will facilitate the collection, processing, annotation, storage, and distribution of high-quality human lung cancer biospecimens through a collaborative network across multiple institutions. LCBRN will consist of a coordinating center that will also function as a biospecimen resource site and a minimum of two additional biospecimen resource sites that will be jointly responsible for developing the biospecimen resource network for lung cancer research. The coordinating center and biospecimen resource sites must submit a single application. It is expected that the coordinating center will provide unique resources that may not necessarily be available at each biospecimen resource site and can be leveraged for LCBRN as a group. The types of lung cancer biospecimens for this proposal may be quite diverse. A list of possible biospecimens may include but are not limited to tumor tissue, matching uninvolved lung parenchyma or airway epithelium, lung exhalant, tissue, blood, sputum, hair, toenails, and bronchoscopic brushings and biopsies. Additional requirements for LCBRN will be the ability to collect, store, and manage data derived from these biospecimens. LCBRN applicants should possess the ability to derivatize DNA, RNA, and proteins, and also utilize both standard and state-of-the-art technologies (e.g., laser capture microdissection, tissue microarrays) to provide the necessary biospecimen processing for lung cancer research studies. The proposed LCBRN must collect, process, annotate, store, and distribute human lung cancer biospecimens that support two or more of the Areas of Emphasis listed below: (1) Identification or development of noninvasive or minimally invasive tools to improve the detection of the initial stages of lung cancer. (2) Identification and development of tools for screening or early detection of lung cancer. Screening may include but is not limited to computed tomography scans, x-rays, other imaging, biomarkers, genetics/genomics/proteomics, and assessment of risk factors. (3) Understanding the molecular mechanisms that lead to clinically significant lung cancer. (4) Identification of the mechanisms that lead to the development of the various types of lung cancer. –(5) Identification of innovative strategies for prevention and treatment of early lung cancer. (6) Understanding predictive and prognostic markers to identify responders and nonresponders. (7) Understanding acquired resistance to treatment. The period of performance for this award is 4 years. The maximum allowable funding for the entire period of performance is $3,800,000, inclusive of direct and indirect costs. Deadline: 2009-12-23

Department of Defense Peer Reviewed Orthopaedic Career Development Award
The Peer Reviewed Orthopaedic Research Program (PRORP) Career Development Award is being offered for the first time in fiscal year 2009 (FY09). This award supports a mentored research experience to prepare military investigators without significant experience in orthopaedic research for a productive, independent career in this field. This award supports individuals in the early stages of their careers by providing the experience necessary to pursue career opportunities at the forefront of orthopaedic research and make significant contributions to combat-relevant orthopaedic research and/or clinical care. FY09 PRORP challenges the scientific community to design innovative research that will foster new directions for and address neglected issues in the field of medical research focused on combat-relevant orthopaedic problems. Though the program emphasizes funding groundbreaking research, all projects must demonstrate appropriate judgment and sound rationale. The program highly encourages the submission of applications involving multidisciplinary collaborations among academia, industry, the military services, the Department of Veterans Affairs , and other federal government agencies. The Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs expects to allot approximately $1.75 million of the $112 million FY09 PRORP appropriation to fund approximately five Career Development Award applications, depending on the quality and number received. The maximum allowable funding for the entire period of performance is $225,000 in direct costs. The applicant may request the entire maximum direct cost amount for a project that may be less than the maximum 3-year period of performance. Deadline: 2009-11-20

FY09 DOD Lung Cancer Research Program Collaborative Translational Research Award
The Lung Cancer Research Program (LCRP) Collaborative Translational Research Award (CTRA) supports partnerships between clinicians and laboratory scientists at multiple institutions to conduct translational research in lung cancer. The purpose of CTRA is to support multi-institutional, multidisciplinary collaborations among clinicians and laboratory scientists that will accelerate the movement of promising ideas in lung cancer into clinical applications. Fiscal year 2009 LCRP CTRA accepts only applications that address at least two of the following seven areas of emphasis:(1) Identification or development of noninvasive or minimally invasive tools to improve the detection of the initial stages of lung cancer. (5) Identification of innovative strategies for prevention and treatment of early lung cancer. (6) Understanding predictive and prognostic markers to identify responders and nonresponders. (7) Understanding acquired resistance to treatment. CTRA supports the development of translational research collaborations among four independent investigators (known as partners). The four partners, consisting of an initiating principal investigator and three partnering PIs, must be from at least two distinct institutions. Computational Biology and Bioinformatic Methods to Enable a Systems Biology Knowledgebase
The Office of Biological and Environmental Research of the Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), announces its interest in receiving applications for potential funding of computational biology and bioinformatic methods and analytics to enable the planned Systems Biology Knowledgebase (Knowledgebase). The goal of systems biology is to understand living systems, a simple microbe or a complex ecosystem, so well that we can develop predictive, computational models of the systems that "behave" the same way as the living system. Such predictive models would enable scientists to accurately predict an organism's or a more complex system's behavior. DOE and the Biological Systems Science Division have made significant investments in large-scale genome sequencing and systems biology research on the capabilities of plants and microbes to provide breakthrough technologies for biofuel production, carbon biosequestration, and waste cleanup. This work has produced petabytes of scattered data and information, much of which is in decentralized archives and databases that are inaccessible to the larger research community. Scientific progress in bioenergy, biogeochemistry, and the carbon-cycle missions will require much greater access to this information by the entire research community. To address this challenge, a Knowledgebase will be developed in the near future. This will serve as a foundation on which scientists can integrate modeling, simulation, experimentation, and bioinformatics. It will not only give scientists free and broad access to diverse data types but will also provide sophisticated tools for data analysis, visualization, and integration. This funding will lead to the development of new computational biology and bioinformatic methods and analytics to enable the Knowledgebase. There are four objectives that may be addressed by applicants responding to this funding opportunity announcement: (1) develop methods to integrate together multiple data types, (2) develop new methods to infer and curate (meta)genomic functional annotations, (3) develop methods to couple multiple cellular pathways and processes, and (4) develop new methods to model whole cellular processes. It is anticipated that up to $5 million will be available for approximately 15 awards to be made in fiscal year 2010. The number of awards will be contingent on satisfactory peer review, the availability of appropriated funds, and the size of the awards. Applications may request project support for up to 3 years, with out-year support contingent on the availability of funds, progress of the research, and programmatic needs. Annual budgets for project applications are expected to range from $100,000 to $500,000 in total cost. Deadline: 2009-11-05

2010 Request for Initial Proposals for Yukon River Salmon Research and Management Projects
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) receives funds for implementation of the Yukon River Salmon Agreement reached with Canada in March 2001. The Yukon River Salmon Act of 2000 authorizes funds for implementation of the agreement including funds for cooperative research and management projects on the Yukon River in Alaska. The Service administers these funds through grant agreements, purchase orders, and contracts on a competitive basis for projects/studies that advance the scientific community's understanding of and management of Chinook and chum salmon in the Yukon River in Alaska. This is a call for initial project proposals of 1 year in length. Successful applicants will be asked to submit detailed proposals. The initial project proposals will be evaluated by the U.S. section of the Yukon River Panel (Panel). Authors of selected initial proposals will be notified by the Service to submit detailed proposals for final review. The Panel reserves the right to ask questions for clarification and conduct negotiations with promising proposal authors prior to final selection. The Panel reserves the right to eliminate from consideration any proposals whose author does not provide clarification in a timely manner, if and when clarification is sought. Panel recommendations on project selections will be forwarded to the Service for consideration of funding. The Service will then develop and award the financial assistance or contractual documents funding the final proposals that meet all federal requirements and for which funding is available. Currently, the source of general funding is appropriated funds directed to the Service. The funds shall be used for cooperative Chinook and chum salmon research and management projects in the portion of the Yukon River drainage located in the United States that are recommended by the Panel after review for scientific and technical merit. The Service will award approximately $390,000 in 2010. The Service encourages modest funding requests. Deadline: 2009-10-09

The Next Generation Fellowship is a 1-year program designed to further the professional development of Asia specialists in the year just after the completion of their master's degree. Successful fellows will gain further knowledge of Asia and an understanding of the U.S. foreign policymaking process by: conducting independent research under the guidance of the National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) editor; collaborating with senior scholars on academic publications; and traveling to Washington, D.C., to participate in the briefing of research findings to relevant constituents within the policy community. The Next Generation Leadership Advisory Board comprises a select group of respected academics and policymakers who have demonstrated commitment and success in the practical work of bridging the academic and policy worlds. The board will provide inspirational leadership to the program and meet individually, as possible, with program fellows in Washington, D.C., to share their vision for the need to strengthen the development of a cohort of young Americans with expertise on Asia. The Next Generation Fellowship Program will grant a 1-year award to two to four fellows annually. Next Generation fellows will work on NBR research projects and participate in the effective delivery of that research to the policy community. The four major components of the Next Generation Fellowship are: (1)Publication: A signature element of the program is the completion by the fellow of at least one journal-quality article that could be published by either NBR or an outside scholarly journal. –(2) Bridging the gap between research and policy. Because NBR believes that writing alone is not adequate to inform policy, the fellow will also participate in NBR's active outreach toward the policy community in Washington, D.C., through participation in conferences, briefings, and private meetings. –(3) Gaining in-depth knowledge of U.S. foreign policymaking. Fellows will engage the policymaking community through association with current and former U.S. government officials on the program's advisory board, the program orientation, and briefings to policymakers. (4) Guidance and mentoring. The Next Generation fellows will be incorporated directly into NBR's substantive policy-research projects. Responsible to and guided by the relevant project director, the fellows will be embedded in the workings of an organization that expresses in daily practice the high ideals of the fellowship's goals. Fellows will acquire or refine skills in: analysis, research, and writing; written presentation of research in a format that is useful to policymakers; briefing skills; team collaboration; project management; and understanding U.S. foreign policy processes. Each fellow will receive a $32,500 fellowship award (with benefits), as well as a reimbursement for some relocation expenses. Deadline: 2010-01-15
