New Research Funding Programs

Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation.

Novel Approaches to Drug Discovery for Alzheimer's Disease

The Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) funds drug discovery research programs from domestic and international investigators in academia and biotechnology companies. In addition, ADDF initiates, sponsors, and co-sponsors conferences to stimulate new ideas and approaches in areas of interest to the foundation, bringing together physicians, scientists, and policy makers worldwide. ADDF funding programs: ADDF Academic Drug Discovery and Development Program seeks to create and support innovative drug discovery and development programs in academic medical centers and universities. The ADDF Biotechnology Development Program supports qualified scientific projects in existing, private, early-stage biotechnology companies. ADDF will provide support for qualified projects in more advanced companies if a clear need for non-profit funding to support the project can be demonstrated and justified. The ADDF Biotechnology Founders Technology Transfer Program supports academic programs that are eligible for technology transfer and the start-up of new biotechnology companies. Up to 35% of funds from these awards may be employed for expenses related to company formation, such as administrative, legal, patent, and third-party vendor costs. Research funding priorities include the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and cognitive aging: ADDF supports drug discovery and drug development efforts towards novel treatments for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, and cognitive decline associated with aging. These may include disease modifying agents for preventing or delaying progression as well as cognitive enhancers. ADDF provides funding for target validation and proof-of-concept studies, high throughput screening of chemical libraries, lead discovery and optimization, rational medicinal chemistry, and pre-clinical drug development. ADDF also supports small proof-of principle clinical research studies. Early detection and prevention: ADDF supports the development of biomarkers, such as advanced brain imaging technologies, cerebrospinal fluid and blood tests for the early detection of mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, and related dementias. ADDF also supports clinical research projects to improve early detection of cognitive impairment through population-based approaches that can impact large numbers of individuals at risk. Deadline: 2010-01-07

F. J. McGuigan Early-Career Investigator Prize

The American Psychological Foundation awards this biennial $25,000 prize to recognize and support the efforts of an early-career psychological scientist who is pursuing research consistent with the scientific interests of Frank Joseph McGuigan, Ph.D. (1924–1998). The prize, which is supported by a bequest from Dr. McGuigan, will be awarded to the recipient's institution for the benefit of his or her research. Faculty salaries and indirect costs may not be requested. The prize supports research that aims to advance, both empirically and theoretically, a materialistic understanding of the human mind. The research may address any aspect of mental function (e.g., cognition, affect, motivation) and should utilize behavioral and/or neuroscientific methods. Deadline: 2010-03-01

Exceptional, Unconventional Research Enabling Knowledge Acceleration (EUREKA) (R01)

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) solicits Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions and/or organizations proposing exceptionally innovative research on novel hypotheses or difficult problems, solutions to which would have an extremely high impact on biomedical or biobehavioral research that is germane to the mission of one or more of the participating National Institute of Health (NIH) institutes. This FOA is for support of new projects, not the continuation of projects that have already been initiated. It does not support pilot projects, i.e., projects of limited scope that are designed primarily to generate data that will enable the principal investigator to seek other funding. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. Deadline: 2009-11-24

Distinguished International Scientist Collaboration Award for U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents (USDISCA)

Through the Distinguished International Scientist Collaboration Program, the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) seeks to enhance international collaborative research on drug abuse and drug-related consequences. The competitive Distinguished International Scientist Collaboration Awards (DISCA) and the Distinguished International Scientist Collaboration Awards for U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents (USDISCA) invite senior researchers from other countries and NIDA grantees to apply to work together in the most suitable locale for their joint research. The program allows participants to choose the travel option that works best for their research. If the project would best be conducted outside the United States, NIDA grantees should apply for a USDISCA award to visit their partner's home country. If the project would best be conducted in the United States, international drug abuse researchers should apply for a DISCA award to visit their U.S. partners. Successful candidates will be highly qualified researchers and priority will be given to new collaborations. Applicants must propose an innovative approach to projects that fall within the NIDA research mission, clearly define their expected product or outcome, and submit a final report to NIDA. DISCA and USDISCA awards provide a research exchange visit lasting from 1 to 3 months, depending upon the project requirements; a monthly allowance of $6500 to cover short-term living expenses in the host country; and one round trip between the home and host cities for only the scientist. Visas and health insurance are the responsibility of the awardee. Deadline: 2010-01-01
