Haiti-Emergency Assistance for Students Grants
The Institute of International Education (IIE) has created an emergency grants program to help students from Haiti on U.S. campuses whose home country support has been seriously affected by the January earthquake in Haiti. Haiti-Emergency Assistance for Students will provide grants of up to $2000 to undergraduates and graduate students from Haiti enrolled in U.S. colleges and universities, who are facing serious financial difficulties due to the recent tragedy in their home country. For the first round of funding, accredited U.S. campuses will be invited to nominate up to five students at their institutions for whom help is immediately needed for the spring semester 2010. The first round of grant nominations should be submitted to IIE by 12 February 2010, with award notification the week of 22 February. The total number of awards distributed will depend on the amount of funds available. If funding permits, IIE will call for a second round of nominations at the end of February. International Student Advisers or other campus officials are invited to submit nominations to IIE; students cannot apply directly. To nominate students, advisors should go to www.iie.org/HaitiEAS. Deadline: 2010-02-12

ADDF Academic Drug Discovery and Development Program
The Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) funds drug discovery research programs from domestic and international investigators in academia and biotechnology companies. In addition, ADDF initiates, sponsors, and cosponsors conferences to stimulate new ideas and approaches in areas of interest to the foundation, bringing together physicians, scientists, and policymakers worldwide. The ADDF Academic Drug Discovery and Development Program seeks to create and support innovative translational programs for Alzheimer's disease, related dementias, and cognitive aging in academic medical centers and universities. Biomarker-development studies and innovative proof of concept pilot clinical trials of new approaches to treatment, prevention, and early detection are also supported. Efforts may include disease-modifying agents for preventing or delaying progression as well as cognitive enhancers. ADDF provides funding for target validation and proof-of-concept studies, high-throughput screening of chemical libraries, lead discovery and optimization, rational medicinal chemistry, and preclinical drug development. ADDF also supports small proof-of-principle clinical research studies. Grant applications are usually solicited by private invitation. Unsolicited proposals are also accepted, but inquiries with ADDF staff are encouraged to determine the foundation's interest prior to application. ADDF provides support for 1 year of research with potential for future follow-on funding. We seek successful long-term partnerships with investigators and research organizations. Deadline: 2010-04-01; 2010-07-01; 2010-10-01

Mechanism for Time-Sensitive Research Opportunities in Environmental Health Sciences (R03)
This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is intended to support research in which an unpredictable opportunity has arisen to collect human or animal biosample baseline or exposure data (e.g., following natural or humanmade disasters, health care policy changes, etc.). The distinctive element of the project should be the need for empirical study for a situation that was not foreseeable and is achievable only if begun within a short time frame. Review by the Initial Review Group and National Advisory Environmental Health Sciences Council will be expedited so an award for a successful competing application can be processed in a shorter period of time than is typical. The entire cycle from submission to award, when appropriate, is expected to be within 6 months. The R03 is intended to support small research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources. This FOA will utilize the National Institutes of Health Small Research Grant (R03) award mechanism and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, PAR-10-084, that encourages applications under the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant mechanism. Budgets for direct costs of up to $50,000 per year and a project duration of up to 2 years may be requested for a maximum of $100,000 direct costs over a 2-year project period. Deadline: 2010-03-05; 2010-04-06; 2010-05-06; 2010-06-04
