Humboldt Research Fellowships for Experienced Researchers
Humboldt Research Fellowships for experienced researchers are the instrument with which the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation enables highly qualified scientists and scholars from abroad who completed their doctorates less than 12 years ago to spend extended periods of research (6 to 18 months; may be divided up into a maximum of three blocks) in Germany. Candidates are expected to have their own clearly defined research profile. This means they should usually be working at least at the level of assistant professor or junior research group leader, or be able to document independent research work over a number of years. Scientists and scholars from all disciplines and countries may apply. Research projects are carried out in cooperation with academic hosts at research institutions in Germany. Candidates choose research projects, and the host in Germany is required to prepare a research plan. Details of the research project and the time schedule must be agreed upon with the prospective host in advance. The duration of the research fellowship (6 to 18 months) may be divided up into a maximum of three visits lasting a minimum of 3 months each. No more than 36 months may elapse between the beginning of the first stay and the end of the last stay. Short-term visits for study and training purposes or for attending conferences are not eligible for sponsorship. The fellowship is worth EUR2450 per month. This includes a mobility lump sum and a contribution toward health and liability insurance. Deadline: 2010-12-31

DOD Ovarian Cancer Pilot Awards
The Ovarian Cancer Research Program Pilot (OCRP) Award supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will drive the field of ovarian cancer forward. Research priorities should include a testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale. Successful projects should provide a catalyst to expand or modify current thinking and/or approaches in ovarian cancer research. Preliminary data are not required but are allowed. The strength of the proposal should be based on sound scientific rationale and logical reasoning. Clinical trials will not be supported by this award mechanism. New for fiscal year (FY) 2010 OCRP is a revised definition of innovation. Innovation is a significant feature of the pilot award. Innovative ideas are those that, if proven correct, will provide totally new paradigms, technologies, molecules, or applications, and that, when applied in the future, will reduce the burden of ovarian cancer. Research that represents an incremental advance on previously published work is not considered innovative. See full announcement for examples of research that is not funded. The Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs expects to allot approximately $6.8 million of the $18.75 million FY 2010 OCRP appropriation to fund approximately 20 pilot awards. The maximum period of performance is 2 years. The maximum allowable funding for the entire period of performance is $200,000 in direct costs. The applicant may request the entire maximum direct cost amount for a project that may be less than the maximum 2-year period of performance. See full announcement for more funding information. Deadline: 2010-03-11

DOD Ovarian Cancer Translational Pilot Awards
The Ovarian Cancer Research Program Translational Pilot Award mechanism supports innovative translational research addressing a critical problem or question in ovarian cancer that will accelerate the movement of promising ideas toward clinical applications. The proposed research should provide a catalyst to challenge or expand current thinking and/or approaches to ovarian cancer. It must involve early-stage translation of an idea from the laboratory to the clinic, or from the clinic back to the laboratory. Observations that generate a translational pilot research idea may be derived from a (1) laboratory discovery, (2) literature review, (3) population-based studies, (4) novel findings from a clinical trial, or (5) a clinician's firsthand knowledge of patients and anecdotal data. Preliminary data are not required but are allowed. The strength of the proposal should be based on sound scientific rationale and logical reasoning. Although the ultimate goal of translational research is to move an observation forward into clinical application, translational research is most effective as a two-way continuum between bench and bedside. Within this continuum, the Translational Pilot Award supports early-stage translational research projects. The maximum period of performance is 2 years. The maximum allowable funding for the entire period of performance is $200,000 in direct costs, plus indirect costs. An optional nested Teal Predoctoral Scholar will receive a maximum of $250,000. The anticipated number of awards is 12. Deadline: 2010-03-11; 2010-06-10

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have been critical for identifying genomic regions associated with addiction phenotypes and have highlighted several areas that require further refinement using deep-sequencing approaches. The goal of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to support studies proposing to use next-generation sequencing technologies to identify the structural variants and single nucleotide polymorphism variants with rare to moderate frequencies that affect addiction risk in well-characterized samples with drug abuse phenotypes. Applications may propose strategies for (1) deep sequencing based on family-based designs; (2) deep sequencing of regions identified by GWAS to be associated with addiction risk; (3) sequencing candidate genes in individuals with extreme phenotypes; or (4) other analytic approaches that capitalize on the genetic architecture. Applicants must use existing DNA samples with appropriately obtained consents for broad data sharing. The total amount to be awarded for this FOA will be up to $10 million in total costs per year, with the anticipated number of awards ranging from one to four. Deadline: 2010-03-29

Health Communications Internship Program
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) recognizes that health-information dissemination is key to raising public awareness about new cancer treatments, support for cancer patients and their families, and prevention strategies. Therefore, in 1975 NCI established the Health Communications Internship Program (HCIP) to attract individuals interested in careers in health communications and science writing. HCIP gives highly qualified graduate students and recent graduate school graduates the opportunity to participate in vital health and science communications projects in one of the many offices that make up NCI. Interns will select an area of emphasis: health communications or science writing. Students may apply for 6-month or 1-year internship terms. HCIP interns are paid a monthly training stipend through a Cancer Research Training Award. The amount of your monthly stipend will be based on your undergraduate GPA, your highest earned degree, and your postdegree relevant experience. Successful health communications applicants have some science background as well as experience and/or education in any of the following areas: (1) public health, (2) epidemiology, (3) public relations, (4) health education, (5) communications, (6) science writing, (7) statistics, (8) social marketing, or (9) journalism. Health communications interns: (1) plan, develop, and promote cancer education programs and materials (including Web-based) for the public, cancer patients, or health professionals; (2) gain experience in pretesting and evaluating cancer prevention and treatment messages, publications, materials, and programs that reach the American public; and (3) participate in professional meetings and training seminars. Successful science writing applicants have a science background plus experience in public relations and/or news writing with the ability to translate technical information into copy suitable for a lay audience. NIH's main campus is located in Bethesda, Maryland. HCIP interns are placed in offices located in Bethesda or Rockville, Maryland. Both locations are accessible via public transportation.
