Chronic Co-Morbid Conditions in HIV+ U.S. Adults on Highly Effective Anti-Retroviral Therapy (R21)
This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), National Institutes of Health, solicits Research Project Grant (R21) applications from institutions/organizations proposing mechanistic projects or interventions designed to understand or intervene in chronic co-morbid conditions common to HIV positive adults living in the United States who are treated with antiretroviral therapy. These conditions may be a result of antiretroviral therapy or the HIV disease process. These same kinds of conditions may also be common in older noninfected adults, but more information is needed on the natural history, including both biological and behavioral manifestations, and appropriate intervention when HIV positive adults are affected by conditions, such as (1) cachexia, (2) diabetes, (3) kidney disease, (4) neurological changes, (5) cardiovascular disease, or (6) cancer. It is important to identify new opportunities for research associated with the use of antiretroviral therapies and the association of comorbidities of HIV positive individuals as they live through middle and old age. Research exploring these issues utilizing interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research teams is strongly encouraged, as are research teams including (1) underrepresented, (2) minority, (3) disabled, or (4) women investigators. This FOA will utilize the R21 grant mechanism and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, RFA-NR-10-001, that encourages applications under the R01 mechanism. The total amount of funding that NINR expects to award through this announcement is $1.875 million for four to six projects split between this FOA and the parallel FOA of identical scientific scope, RFA-NR-10-001 (R01). Deadline: 2010-04-05

Science of Behavior Change: Finding Mechanisms of Change in the Laboratory and the Field (R01)
This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) solicits Research Project Grant (R01) applications that will improve understanding of the basic mechanisms of behavior change by bridging work in the laboratory and the field. This understanding will advance several goals, including: (1) the identification of the optimal targets and time points in the life course for intervention; (2) the identification of common mechanisms of change related to either multiple or bundled health behaviors; (3) the ability to tailor interventions to particular at-risk individuals or groups; (4) the application of novel technologies for behavioral assessment and change; and (5) the identification of individuals or groups most likely to benefit from specific interventions. This initiative seeks to establish the groundwork for a unified science of behavior change, capitalizing on emerging basic science to accelerate the investigation of common mechanisms that play a role in initiating or maintaining behavior change and are applicable across a broad range of health-related behaviors. Approaches from (1) behavioral economics; (2) the social, behavioral, cognitive, and affective neurosciences; (3) neuroeconomics; (4) behavior genetics and genomics; and (5) systems science are specifically encouraged. By focusing basic research on the mechanisms of behavior change, and by integrating work across laboratory and field contexts, this initiative should transform the efficacy and cost efficiency of behavior change interventions. This FOA will utilize the R01 award mechanism. The National Institutes of Health will commit up to $4 million to this funding initiative beginning in fiscal year 2010, allowing the support of six or seven new R01 applications. Major Research Instrumentation Program
The Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Program serves to increase access to shared scientific and engineering instruments for research and research training in our nation's institutions of higher education, museums, science centers, and not-for-profit organizations. This program especially seeks to improve the quality and expand the scope of research and research training in science and engineering by providing shared instrumentation that fosters the integration of research and education in research-intensive learning environments. Development and acquisition of research instrumentation for shared inter- and/or intra-organizational use are encouraged, as are development efforts that leverage the strengths of private sector partners to build instrument development capacity at academic institutions. To accomplish these goals, the MRI Program assists with the acquisition or development of shared research instrumentation that is, in general, too costly and/or not appropriate for support through other National Science Foundation (NSF) programs. Instruments are expected to be operational for regular research use by the end of the award period. For the purposes of the MRI Program, proposals must be for either acquisition or development of a single instrument or for equipment that, when combined, serves as an integrated research instrument (physical or virtual). The MRI Program does not support the acquisition or development of a suite of instruments to outfit research facilities or to conduct independent research activities simultaneously. The estimated number of awards is 150. The anticipated funding amount is $90 million. Instrument acquisition or development proposals that request funds from NSF in the range of $100,000 to $4 million will be accepted from all eligible organizations. Deadline: 2010-04-21

American Competitiveness in Chemistry-Fellowship
The American Competitiveness in Chemistry-Fellowship (ACC-F) is a program to support postdoctoral associates in chemistry. It seeks to (1) build ties between academic and industrial, and/or national laboratory, and/or Chemistry Division-funded center researchers (partners); and (2) involve beginning scientists in efforts to broaden participation in chemistry. Fellows will pursue research with industrial, and/or national laboratory, and/or Chemistry Division-funded center partners that will enrich their in-house research program. In addition, fellows will develop and implement their own plans for broadening participation in the chemical sciences. Successful applicants must propose a well-integrated, synergistic research plan with their chosen affiliate as well as an effective outreach plan that will broaden participation by underrepresented groups in chemistry. The research must be in a thematic area that is supported by the National Science Foundation Division of Chemistry. The program will support fellows for 2 years of postgraduate study. The Chemistry Division envisions that postdoctoral fellows with successful programs who pursue careers in academia will have opportunities for significant additional funding, either through supplements to their original ACC-F award or through new awards from the division. It is estimated that 10 awards will be funded. The anticipated funding amount is $2 million. Deadline: 2010-05-06

The expressed intent of research support is to improve maternal cardiovascular health in order to insure improved maternal and neonatal outcomes. Vision Grants are small awards intended to provide initial funding for innovative ideas that might otherwise not be pursued due to lack of funding. Although these awards are ideal for young investigators, they are not limited to young investigators. They should, however, be directed toward novel rather than well-established lines of research. This year the Preeclampsia Foundation will be awarding approximately two research grants of up to $25,000 each. Deadline: 2010-05-17

Academic Career Award (Parent K07)
The purpose of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Academic Career Award (K07) is to provide support to increase the pool of individuals with academic and research expertise to become academic researchers and to enhance the educational or research capacity at the grantee sponsoring grantee institution. The Academic Career Award supports K07 development awards for more junior level candidates and K07 leadership awards for more senior individuals with acknowledged scientific expertise and leadership skills. Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact the relevant NIH staff for institute/center(IC)-specific programmatic and budgetary information. This funding opportunity announcement will utilize the K07 award mechanism. Because the nature and scope of the proposed career award program will vary from application to application, and the amounts provided by the participating ICs are not uniform, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. Candidates may request up to 5 years of support (at least 3 years are required for the K07 Development award, and at least 2 years are required for the K07 Leadership award).
