Clinical Scientist in Nephrology (CSN) Program

The American Kidney Fund is pleased to invite applications for its Clinical Scientist in Nephrology (CSN) Program for the academic year 2011–12. The goal of the CSN Program is to improve the quality of care provided to kidney patients and to promote clinical research in nephrology. This goal is achieved by enhancing the training of nephrologists who desire to pursue academic careers and whose primary professional commitment is to scholarship in the provision of patient care. Awardees conduct prevention and outcomes research while receiving advanced training in essential skills such as medical ethics, biostatistics, and epidemiology. A Clinical Scientist in Nephrology fellowship may be granted yearly. The maximum duration of each fellowship is 2 years. The maximum level of funding is $80,000 per year and shall be used principally to support the candidate and his/her career development. This sum is expected to cover the individual fellow's salary. Applications are due by 1 December. Deadline: 2010-12-01

Critical Issues: Emerging and New Plant and Animal Diseases

This program is designed to provide one-time seed funding to help initiate work requiring immediate attention until other longer-term resources can be secured to address the issue. The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) will be soliciting proposals on an as-needed basis during the year to address specific new or emerging issues. For this particular solicitation, NIFA is requesting proposals that address specific aspects of the following animal pest and disease issue: development and dissemination of new knowledge supporting radiological incident preparedness, response, and recovery for U.S. animal agriculture, and animal-derived food production infrastructures. Priority will be given to proposals that demonstrate evidence of collaboration and communication with working groups and approved multistate research committees, however, all applicants qualified to conduct the research are encouraged to apply. Approximately $318,600 is available to fund applications in fiscal year 2010. Deadline: 2010-08-16

Research and Evaluation on Education in Science and Engineering

The Research and Evaluation on Education in Science and Engineering (REESE) program seeks to advance research at the frontiers of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning, education, and evaluation. The program also seeks to provide the foundational knowledge necessary to improve STEM teaching and learning at all educational levels and in all settings. This solicitation calls for four types of proposals--pathways, synthesis, empirical research, and large empirical research. The goals of the REESE program are to: (1) catalyze discovery and innovation at the frontiers of STEM learning, education, and evaluation; (2) stimulate the field to produce high-quality and robust research results through the progress of theory, method, and human resources; and (3) coordinate and transform advances in education, learning research, and evaluation. REESE places particular importance upon the involvement of young investigators in the projects at doctoral, postdoctoral, and early-career stages, as well as the involvement of STEM disciplinary experts. In addition, research questions related to educational research methodology and evaluation are central to the REESE activity. The estimated number of awards is 23 to 40. The anticipated funding amount is $29 million. Deadline: 2010-11-15

Centers for Chemical Innovation

The Centers for Chemical Innovation (CCI) Program supports research centers focused on major, long-term, fundamental chemical research challenges. CCIs that address these challenges will (1) produce transformative research, (2) lead to innovation, and (3) attract broad scientific and public interest. CCIs are agile structures that can respond rapidly to emerging opportunities and make full use of cyberinfrastructure to enhance collaborations. CCIs may partner with researchers from industry, government laboratories, and international organizations. CCIs integrate research, innovation, education, and public outreach and include a plan to broaden participation of underrepresented groups. The CCI program is a two-phase program. Both phases are described in this solicitation. Phase I CCIs receive significant resources to develop the science and integrative elements of a CCI before requesting phase II funding. Phase I proposals funded in fiscal year 2011 will seek phase II funding in FY 2014. Only organizations receiving phase I awards in FY 2008 are eligible to request phase II funding in FY 2011. In FY 2011, three or four phase I awards and one or two phase II awards. The anticipated funding amount is $7 million to $12 million in FY 2011. Deadline: 2010-10-12
