National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering Program Project (P01) Applications
This funding opportunity announcement (FOA), issued by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), National Institutes of Health (NIH), encourages investigator-initiated Program Project Grant (P01) applications from institutions/organizations in the broad areas of biomedical imaging and bioengineering enabled by relevant areas of the physical sciences, engineering, computer sciences, information science, and the medical and life sciences. P01 grants are to support broad-based multidisciplinary research programs, which have a well-defined major objective or central theme but which address a range of imaging or bioengineering questions in contrast to the traditional research project (R01). Proposed program projects may address any of the broad areas of imaging and bioengineering research supported by the institute. This FOA supports the NIH Program Project (P01) grant mechanism. The P01 mechanism is designed for research in which the funding of several independent projects as a group offers significant scientific advantages over support of the same projects as individual research grants. An NIBIB P01 application requires a minimum of three interrelated research projects, and the component projects must share a common central theme, focus, and overall objective. Budgets for direct costs per year will depend upon specific project requirements, and a project duration of up to 5 years may be requested. The expected direct cost for program project awards is $1.2 million to $1.4 million per year for most studies within the scope of this FOA. Deadline: 2010-08-26; 2010-09-25; 2010-12-27; 2011-01-25

NCMHD Health Disparities Research (R01)
The overarching goal of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to solicit innovative research addressing elements of health disparities. Research focused on disease and/or conditions that disproportionately affect racial/ethnic minorities and other underserved populations is a growing field and has been employed lately in understanding the dynamics contributing to health disparities. Funding for this FOA will support investigators who propose to conduct health-disparities research using its principles to improve health. The research should take into account the characteristics of health systems and health-seeking behaviors that propagate disparities. The focus of the targeted research is diverse and may include racial/ethnic minorities and other health-disparity populations (such as rural and low-income populations). This FOA will utilize the National Institutes of Health Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism. The National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities has designated approximately $3.8 million in total costs to fund 10 or more awards in fiscal year 2011. Deadline: 2010-08-29; 2010-09-29

Clinical Studies of Safety and Effectiveness of Orphan Products Research Project Grant (R01)
The Office of Orphan Products Development (OPD) was created to identify and promote the development of orphan products. Orphan products are drugs, biologics, medical devices, and medical foods that are indicated for a rare disease or condition (that is, one with prevalence, not incidence, of fewer than 200,000 people in the United States). Diagnostics and vaccines will qualify for orphan status only if the U.S. population to whom they will be administered is fewer than 200,000 people per year. The goal of the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) OPD grant program is to support the clinical development of products for use in rare diseases or conditions for which no current therapy exists or for which the proposed product will be superior to the existing therapy. FDA provides grants for clinical studies on safety and/or effectiveness that will result in, or substantially contribute to, market approval of these products. Support will be in the form of a research project (R01) grant. Of the estimated fiscal year (FY) 2012 funding ($14.1 million), approximately $10 million will fund noncompeting continuation awards, and approximately $4.1 million will fund five to 12 new awards. It is anticipated that funding for the number of noncompeting continuation awards and new awards in FY 2013 will be similar to FY 2012. Deadline: 2011-02-02; 2012-02-01
