Structural Interventions, Alcohol Use, and Risk of HIV/AIDS (R21)

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, National Institutes of Health (NIH), encourages research grant applications from institutions/organizations that propose to investigate the effectiveness of structural interventions that reduce the risk of HIV/AIDS transmission by changing the environment of alcohol use. Although a variety of structural and environmental interventions have been employed successfully to reduce other drinking-related problems, there has been relatively little research that extends such efforts into the realm of HIV/AIDS risk reduction. This FOA will use the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) award mechanism and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-10-242, that encourages applications under the R01 grant mechanism. The total project period for an application submitted in response to this funding opportunity may not exceed 2 years. Direct costs are limited to $275,000 over an R21 2-year period, with no more than $200,000 in direct costs allowed in any single year. Deadline: 2010-09-07; 2011-01-07; 2011-05-07

Alcohol-Induced Metabolic and Hepatic Injury (AIMHI) (R01)

The goal of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA), issued by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), is to stimulate innovative research that will determine the key cellular and molecular events responsible for the progression of alcohol-induced fatty liver to fibrosis and cirrhosis in patients with alcoholic liver disease (ALD) alone or in combination with obesity, diabetes, or Hepatitis C infection. We anticipate that the results of such research will identify the mechanisms responsible for the increased susceptibility to the progression of ALD to end-stage liver disease and help identify promising molecular targets for early detection of the most at-risk population. This FOA will utilize the National Institutes of Health Research Project Grant (R01) grant mechanism. NIAAA intends to commit a total of approximately $1.5 million to this FOA to award up to six applications. Basic Research to Enable Agricultural Development (BREAD)

The National Science Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are partnering to support a new research program to be administered by NSF. The objective of the Basic Research to Enable Agricultural Development (BREAD) program is to support innovative basic scientific research designed to address key constraints to smallholder agriculture in the developing world. A significant distinction between BREAD and other NSF programs is that proposals to BREAD must make a clear and well-defined connection between the outcomes of the proposed basic research and its direct relevance and potential application to agriculture in the developing world. The BREAD program takes the activities of the Plant Genome Research Program to the next level by supporting a broader range of scientific research and by enabling funding to be allocated to international collaborators through subawards. The program's focus is on novel, transformative basic research at the proof-of-concept stage rather than its application or development. Especially encouraged are original proposals that address major constraints to the productivity of crops important to smallholder farmers or on the development of novel and efficient production practices. Although the program places an initial emphasis on crop improvement, it will also consider innovative basic research proposals from scientists in all fields of research and engineering as long as the proposed research is consistent with the program objectives. Proposals are also expected to address project outcomes in the context of broader societal impacts, and as appropriate to the research proposed, engage international partners in scientific collaborations. The estimated number of awards is 10 to 20. The anticipated funding amount is $12 million. Deadline: 2010-09-16; 2010-11-16

Computational Mathematics

This program supports mathematical research in areas of science where computation plays a central and essential role, emphasizing design, analysis, and implementation of numerical methods and algorithms and symbolic methods. The prominence of computation with analysis of the computational approach in the research is a hallmark of the program. Proposals ranging from single-investigator projects that develop and analyze innovative computational methods to interdisciplinary team projects that not only create and analyze new mathematical and computational techniques but also use/implement them to model, study, and solve important application problems are encouraged. Deadline: 2010-12-15

Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology

The Directorate for Biological Sciences awards Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology to recent recipients of the doctoral degree for research and training in selected areas supported by BIO and with special goals for human resource development in biology. The fellowships encourage independence at an early stage of the research career to permit fellows to pursue their research and training goals in the most appropriate research locations regardless of the availability of funding for the fellows at that site. Visit the Web site for a list of funded BIO programs. Because the fellowships are offered only to postdoctoral scientists early in their careers, the National Science Foundation encourages doctoral advisers to discuss the availability of BIO fellowships with their graduate students early in their doctoral programs. Fellowships are awards to individuals, not institutions, and are administered by the fellows. The estimated number of awards is 15. The anticipated funding amount is $5 million to $6 million each year. Deadline: 2010-10-19; 2011-10-11

Environmental Research Apprenticeship Program for Pre-Baccalaureate College Students

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Risk Management Research Laboratory, Ground Water and Ecosystem Restoration Division (GWERD) is located in Ada, Oklahoma, and is the site of the Environmental Research Apprenticeship Program for Pre-Baccalaureate College Students. This request for applications seeks institutions of higher education and other nonprofit organizations to implement an apprenticeship program for up to 15 pre-baccalaureate college students. This program provides undergraduate students with year-round research opportunities that allow students to relate hands-on research experience with formal academic studies. It also provides invaluable experience regarding the relevance of academic training to the conduct of research. It is intended that the research experience be gained through a mentoring relationship with a senior (GWERD) scientist working in a fully operational federal research laboratory. This program provides direct benefit to the academic community and the general public by increasing both the effectiveness and pool of available environmental scientists for the future. EPA anticipates awarding one cooperative agreement for up to $500,000 (an estimated $100,000 per year for up to 5 years). Deadline: 2010-09-15
