Charles H. Hood Foundation

Child Health Research Awards Program

The Charles H. Hood Foundation was incorporated in 1942 to improve the health and quality of life for children throughout New England. Today's research projects encompass many disciplines that accelerate pediatric discoveries while launching the careers of promising junior faculty members. The intent of the award is to support newly independent faculty members, provide the opportunity to demonstrate creativity, and assist in the transition to other sources of research funding. Research projects must be relevant to child health. The funding period is from 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2012. Up to five $150,000 awards at $75,000 per year (inclusive of 10% institutional overhead) will be awarded. Deadline: 2010-09-22

Grants for Early Medical/Surgical Subspecialists Transition to Aging Research (R03)

This program provides 2 years of support for small research projects to allow early-career physicians trained in medical and surgical subspecialties to establish a research track record in geriatric aspects of their subspecialty. The award will provide an opportunity to gain skills and experience in aging research and help the investigators establish an independent program of research in this field. This funding opportunity announcement will utilize the R03 award mechanism. The National Institute on Aging will provide $1.5 million in total costs in fiscal year 2011 to support 18 to 20 awards. Deadline: 2010-10-03; 2010-11-03

Strategies for Treatment of Young Adults with Alcohol Use Disorders (R21)

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), invites applications to support new research on the treatment of young adults (18 to 25 years of age) with alcohol-use disorders. Compared with all other age groups, the prevalence of periodic heavy or high-risk drinking is greatest among young adults ages 18 to 25. Alcohol-use disorders, including alcohol dependence, also peak during this critical period during which profound developmental changes occur. Despite members of this group having the highest prevalence of drinking, interventions for them have been understudied. Gaps exist in understanding (1) how to effectively engage this group in treatment; (2) which treatments are the most effective; and (3) how to maintain treatment gains in the longer term after treatment. This funding opportunity announcement will use the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) award mechanism and runs in parallel with two FOAs of identical scientific scope, PAS-10-246, which encourages applications under the R01 mechanism, and PAS-10-247, which encourages applications under the R03 mechanism. NIAAA has set aside $1.5 million in total cost for fiscal year 2011 and expects that a total of up to six awards will be made for this and companions FOAs. Deadline: 2010-10-16; 2011-02-16; 2011-06-16

NIH Common Fund Transformative Research Projects Program (R01)

Through the National Institutes of Health Common Fund, NIH invites transformative Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions/organizations proposing groundbreaking, exceptionally innovative, high-risk, original, and/or unconventional research with the potential to create new scientific paradigms or challenge existing ones. Projects must clearly demonstrate potential to produce a major impact in a broad area of biomedical or behavioral research. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) will utilize the R01 award mechanism. The NIH Common Fund will commit $25 million in fiscal year 2011 for this program. The number of awards will depend on the size and scope of the most meritorious applications; however, up to one-third of the budget for this FOA will be reserved projects exceeding $1 million in direct costs. Budget requests should be commensurate with project needs for up to a 5-year project period. Deadline: 2010-09-27; 2010-10-27

Compared with all other age groups, the prevalence of periodic heavy or high-risk drinking is greatest among young adults ages 18 to 25. Gaps exist in understanding (1) how to effectively engage this group in treatment; (2) which treatments are the most effective; and (3) how to maintain treatment gains in the longer term after treatment. This funding opportunity announcement will utilize the R01 grant mechanism and runs in parallel with two FOAs of identical scientific scope, PAS-10-247, which encourages applications under the R03 mechanism, and PAS-10-248, which encourages applications under the R21 mechanism. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. NIAAA has set aside $1.5 million in total cost for fiscal year 2011 and expects that a total of up to six awards will be made for this and companion FOAs. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the quality, duration, and costs of the applications received. Deadline: 2010-09-06; 2010-10-05; 2011-01-07; 2011-02-05

Structural Interventions, Alcohol Use, and Risk of HIV/AIDS (R01)

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA), issued by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, National Institutes of Health, encourages RO1 research grant applications from institutions/organizations that propose to investigate the effectiveness of structural interventions that reduce the risk of HIV/AIDS transmission by changing the environment of alcohol use. Although a variety of structural and environmental interventions have been employed successfully to reduce other drinking-related problems, there has been relatively little research that extends such efforts into the realm of HIV/AIDS risk reduction. This FOA will utilize the R01 grant mechanism and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-10-243, that encourages applications under the R21 grant mechanism. Deadline: 2010-09-07; 2011-01-07; 2011-05-07
