The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) encourages applications from institutions/organizations to participate in this funding opportunity announcement (FOA), Next Generation PrEP. The purpose of this FOA is to: (1) develop the basic and preclinical framework needed for development of second and subsequent generations of PrEP agents; (2) create a rational pipeline for the discovery of new molecular entities and the identification of existing antiretrovirals (including those that are approved for HIV treatment and those that are not approved but may have clinical data) that can be used for the next generation of PrEP agents; (3) develop preclinical algorithms with clear go/no-go criteria for identifying and prioritizing PrEP candidates for advancement to clinical evaluation; (4) generate PK/PD models to assess protective effects at mucosal sites of HIV transmission; and (5) conduct proof-of-concept safety and efficacy studies in animal models. NIAID intends to commit approximately $3.2 million for this FOA for fiscal year 2012 to fund three to five applications. Deadline: 2011-08-08; 2011-09-08

Optimizing Fidelity of Empirically-Supported Behavioral Treatments for Mental Disorders (R21/R33)
This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) seeks research applications designed to develop and test methods for improving the fidelity, and ultimately the effectiveness, of empirically supported behavioral treatments (ESBTs) implemented by front-line therapists in community-practice settings. Because achieving this aim presumes valid and reliable assessment of fidelity, this FOA uses the sequential R21/R33 funding mechanisms to encourage research designed to develop and test (a) methods for assessing theory-derived ESBT fidelity components during the R21 phase and (b) interventions that enhance and maintain the fidelity with which clinicians implement an ESBT in community-practice settings during the R33 phase. The National Institute of Mental Health intends to commit approximately $1.5 million in fiscal year 2012 to fund up to seven grants in response to this FOA. Deadline: 2011-05-20; 2011-06-20

Basic Research in Calcific Aortic Valve Disease (R01)
This funding opportunity announcement funds molecular and physiological research that could lead to early diagnosis or effective medical therapy for calcific aortic valve disease. Applications from investigators in related fields (for example, mineralization and bone physiology, extracellular matrix physiology, and molecular imaging) are strongly encouraged. Applicants must describe in the application how the proposed research could lead to early diagnosis or effective medical therapy for calcific aortic valve disease. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute expects to commit $4 million total costs per year to support the award of up to 10 awards. The maximum award budget is $250,000 direct costs per year. The maximum award period is 4 years. Deadline: 2011-09-12; 2011-10-11

Life After Linkage: The Future of Family Studies (R01)
This funding opportunity announcement issued by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) solicits applications which integrate novel molecular data with existing genotype and phenotype data in families to identify and characterize genes influencing complex disorders. Applications for this program should have previously examined families with some genotyping and phenotypes available. Proposals may utilize focused ascertainment from families, for example, using risk profile, extreme phenotypes, or families contributing heavily to genomic signals. The program may support the addition of targeted or whole-genome sequencing, exon sequencing, copy-number variants, expression profiling, metabolomics, epigenomics, and/or novel biomarkers. This may require additional sample collection and/or reconsent. Applications should include a strong analytic component focused on bioinformatics and integration of multiple data types. NHLBI intends to commit $26.8 million over 5 years to fund five to seven grants. NHGRI intends to commit $5 million over 5 years to the program. Deadline: 2011-05-16; 2011-06-15

Pilot Studies to Develop and Test Novel, Low- Cost Methods for the Conduct of Clinical Trials (R01)
The funding announcement solicits R01 applications that develop and test new, low cost methods to conduct clinical trials. Responsive applicants will address four challenges to the conduct of clinical trials: (1) minimize specialized infrastructure, (2) minimize visits designed solely for the trial, (3) explore novel methods of obtaining consent that minimize burden, and (4) employ low-cost methods of monitoring study conduct. The proposed methodology must be tested in a pilot trial. New and innovative designs that have not been tested in previous studies but hold potential for increasing the efficiency and reducing the cost of conduct of clinical trials are especially encouraged. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute intends to commit $8,550,000 for fiscal years 2012-2015, to fund up to three awards. Deadline: 2011-09-13; 2011-10-13

Pulmonary Vascular-Right Ventricular Axis Research Program (R01)
This funding opportunity announcement solicits research grant applications from organizations proposing to study right ventricular (RV) function, dysfunction, and disease. Utilizing a multidisciplinary and collaborative team approach, this program will foster research that will lead to improved diagnostics and therapeutics for RV disease, particularly in the setting of lung vascular disease. Human subjects research must be proposed, and applicants are strongly encouraged to use the multiple principal investigator approach to study the right ventricular-pulmonary vascular axis. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute intends to commit $4,050,000 for up to six awards in fiscal year 2012. Deadline: 2011-09-13; 2011-10-13

Development and Translation of Medical Technologies to Reduce Health Disparities (R43/R44)
This funding opportunity announcement encourages Small Business Innovation Research grant applications from small-business concerns that propose to develop and translate medical technologies aimed at reducing disparities in health care access and health outcomes. Appropriate medical technologies should be effective, affordable, culturally acceptable, and deliverable to those who need them. Responsive grant applications must involve a formal collaboration with a health care provider or other health care organization serving a health-disparity population during phase I and phase II. Budgets up to $200,000 total costs per year for phase I and up to $400,000 total costs per year for phase II may be requested. Durations up to 2 years for phase I and up to 3 years for phase II may be requested. Deadline: 2011-08-22; 2011-09-22

The National Institutes of Health announces a unique opportunity for investigators working with small-molecule compounds to gain access to a robust virtual pharma drug-development network to develop neurotherapeutic drugs. Successful applicants to this funding opportunity announcement will become collaborative participants in this network, receiving both funding and no-cost access to contracted drug-development services that are not typically available to the academic research community. Funding will be provided through a U01 cooperative agreement mechanism to conduct biological testing of compound analogs in disease assays and models in the investigator's laboratory. No-cost drug-development services will also be provided, including medicinal chemistry optimization, IND-directed pharmacology and toxicology, and phase I clinical testing. Researchers in possession of disease assays and small-molecule compounds that show promise for treating nervous system and psychiatric disorders, but that are not yet suitable for clinical testing, are strongly encouraged to apply. The participating institutes/centers intend to commit up to $2,325,000 in fiscal year 2012 to fund up to 13 awards. Deadline: 2011-05-10; 2011-06-10; 2011-11-15; 2011-12-15

The purpose of the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards (Kirschstein-NRSA) is to provide support to individuals for combined M.D./Ph.D. and other dual doctoral degree training. The participating institutes award this Kirschstein-NRSA individual fellowship (F30) to qualified applicants with the potential to become productive, independent, highly trained physician-scientists and other clinician-scientists, including patient-oriented researchers in their scientific mission areas. This funding opportunity supports individual predoctoral F30 fellowships with the expectation that these training opportunities will increase the number of future investigators with both clinical knowledge and skills in basic, translational, or clinical research. Deadline: 2011-08-08; 2011-12-08
