Research on Children in Military Families: The Impact of Parental Military Deployment and Reintegration on Child and Family Functioning (R21)

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement is to encourage developmental and exploratory studies on the impact of parental military deployment, combat-related stress, and reintegration with the family on child social and affective development as well as family functioning. Intervention studies targeting the particular concerns of early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence are also encouraged, as are the development and testing of measures to assess family functioning and child development outcomes. Direct costs are limited to $275,000 over a 2-year project period. Deadline: 2011-06-16; 2011-10-16

Anchoring Metabolomic Changes to Phenotype (P20)

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) issued by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Institutes of Health, encourages applications from institutions or organizations that propose metabolomic phenotyping of existing cohorts to gain mechanistic understanding of the molecular determinants contributing to cardiovascular and lung disease phenotypes to help in predicting disease susceptibility, diagnosis, risk stratification, assessing response to therapy, and assessing prognosis. This FOA proposes a multidisciplinary and integrated program with two interacting components, a metabolomic component and a mechanistic component, each informing the other in an iterative manner. NHLBI intends to commit approximately $26 million in total costs over a 5-year period to fund three to five new grants in response to this FOA. Deadline: 2011-05-17; 2011-06-17

Translation of Pluripotent Stem Cell Therapies for Blood Diseases (R01)

This funding opportunity announcement issued by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health, encourages Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions and organizations that propose collaborative, multidisciplinary, multiproject director/principal investigator research for the development of new technologies needed to utilize stem cells in future cell therapies to treat sickle cell disease and other blood disorders. This initiative focuses on two key areas that are impediments to further progress: (1) development of techniques to efficiently generate hematopoietic cells by either differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells or by cellular reprogramming to yield sufficient numbers of good manufacturing practices quality cells for clinical evaluation and (2) development of protocols that enable the efficient engraftment of hematopoietic cells derived from pluripotent stem cells or derived by cellular reprogramming. Each multidisciplinary application will designate two or more project directors/principal investigators. This program will be implemented in collaboration with the ongoing NHLBI Progenitor Cell Biology Consortium (http://www.progenitorcells.org/) and will add separate additional research projects. Extensive collaboration is expected between the existing consortium hubs, and the new group(s) are also expected to collaborate extensively with the consortium hubs. The maximum period is 5 years. Deadline: 2011-10-05; 2012-10-05

Role of Environmental Chemical Exposures in the Development of Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome (R01)

The program announcement, issued by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, encourages grant applications to understand the role of environmental chemical exposures in the development of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and/or metabolic syndrome. Applications must link an environmental exposure to the increased incidence of weight gain, glucose tolerance/insulin sensitivity, and aspects of metabolic syndrome in animal models or human studies. While any exposure window is acceptable, it is anticipated that the most sensitive time for exposures to affect the disease outcomes will be during development, e.g., in utero and/or neonatal or early childhood. For human studies, developmental exposures (in utero and early childhood) should be linked to early biomarkers of disease onset. Animal studies should focus on identifying environmental chemicals that alter endpoints indicative of affecting disease development and the site and mechanism(s) of the effects that lead to the increased disease incidence. The maximum period is 5 years. Deadline: 2011-05-23; 2012-05-23

Pathophysiology of HIV-Associated Neurodegeneration in Aging Populations on Long-Term Anti-Retroviral Therapy (R01)

The National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute on Aging, and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke invite research grant applications focused on elucidating the mechanisms of HIV-associated neuropathogenesis in the context of aging, chronic infection with HIV, and long-term exposure to Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART). The neuropathogenic mechanisms of HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorders (HAND) may be distinct in the aging HIV-infected populations given the potential interactions between aging-associated events, HIV-associated neurodegenerative processes, and exposure to HAART. Understanding the pathogenesis of HAND in HIV-infected individuals over 50 years of age, in light of potential interactions with HAART, neurodegenerative diseases, and aging-related co-morbid conditions are the focus of this announcement. Applications ranging from basic research to clinical diagnosis and treatment in domestic and international settings are of interest. Multidisciplinary research teams and collaborative alliances are encouraged but not required. The total project period for an application submitted in response to this funding opportunity announcement may not exceed 5 years. Deadline: 2011-08-09; 2011-09-09
