Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation

Damon Runyon - Rachleff Innovation Award

The Damon Runyon-Rachleff Innovation Award is designed to provide support for the next generation of exceptionally creative thinkers with "high-risk/high-reward" ideas that have the potential to significantly impact our understanding of and/or approaches to the prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of cancer. The Innovation Award is specifically designed to provide funding for extraordinary early-career researchers who have an innovative new idea but lack sufficient preliminary data to obtain traditional funding. It is not designed to fund incremental advances. The research supported by the award must be novel, exceptionally creative, and, if successful, have the strong potential for high impact in the cancer field. Awards are made to institutions for support of the Damon Runyon-Rachleff Innovation Investigators. The award will be for a period of 3 years. Each award will provide a total of $450,000 in direct costs. The award cannot be used for indirect costs or institutional overhead. Awards will be paid in increments of $150,000 per year for 3 years. However, the Innovation Award Committee will consider an accelerated payment schedule if an award recipient can demonstrate compelling need. All awards are approved by the Board of Directors of the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation acting upon the recommendation of the Innovation Award Committee. The Damon Runyon-Rachleff Innovation Award is being funded by the generous support of Andrew and Debra Rachleff. Deadline: 2011-06-01; 2011-09-01

Translational Research for the Development of Novel Interventions for Mental Disorders (R21/R33)

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) encourages Exploratory/Developmental Phased Innovation (R21/R33) grant applications to speed the translation of emerging findings on the neuroscience of mental disorders into novel intervention approaches that will ultimately reduce symptoms and/or restore function. This FOA provides support for up to 2 years (R21 phase) for preliminary, proof-of-principle studies in human participants, followed by up to 3 years of support (R33 phase) for pilot studies to assess the implementation of the intervention, and evaluate the feasibility of conducting a larger trial to assess the efficacy of the intervention. A range of nonpharmacologic treatment approaches will be accepted, including those based on neurophysiological, cognitive, affective, and/or social neuroscience models, basic behavioral science, and neurodevelopmental models. Applications submitted in response to this FOA must involve novel treatment targets, and/or novel and highly innovative approaches to engage and modify known targets. The National Institute of Mental Health intends to commit approximately $2 million in fiscal year 2012 to fund up to eight awards in response to this FOA. The R21 phase may not exceed 2 years or $325,000 in direct costs, with no more than $225,000 in direct costs in any single year of the R21 phase. The R33 phase may not exceed 3 years or $525,000 in direct costs, with no more than $250,000 in direct costs in any single year of the R33 phase. Deadline: 2011-05-18; 2011-06-16; 2011-09-17; 2011-10-16

NINDS Program Project Grant (P01)

This funding opportunity announcement is issued by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) to enable submission of program project grant applications that propose to conduct innovative, interactive research to answer significant scientific questions that are important for the mission of NINDS, via a synergistic collaboration between outstanding scientists who might not otherwise collaborate. The program project grant mechanism is designed to support research in which the funding of several interdependent, highly-meritorious projects as a group offers significant scientific advantages over support of these same projects as individual research grants. Application budgets are not limited, but need to reflect actual needs of the proposed project. It is strongly recommended that potential applicants consult NINDS staff about their anticipated budget very early in the planning stage and a minimum of 12 weeks before submission of an application is anticipated. The maximum project period for these awards is 5 years. Deadline: 2011-05-25; 2011-09-25
