New Research Funding Programs

DEBRA International

Epidermolysis Bullosa EUR 3M Collaborative Research Programme Fund

Epidermolysis Bullosa EUR 3M Collaborative Research Programme Fund proposals are now invited for research programs targeting therapy development for severe forms of Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) and their life-limiting consequences. EB is a group of genetic blistering conditions that can result in a life of extreme pain, disability, and, at its worst, death in infancy. DEBRA International is the patient advocacy and support organization for people with EB and funds EB research worldwide. Funded projects are selected through peer-review, and judged for scientific excellence, value for money, and anticipated patient benefit. For the current call, funded by DEBRA Austria, proposals are invited “to make a breakthrough in developing therapies, systemic or topical, for severe forms of EB, or EB-related cancer, or other severe and life-limiting clinical problems, associated with severe forms of EB.” Proposals may request DEBRA funding for either (1) a period of up to 3 years and a budget of up to €1.5 million; or (2) up to 5 years and a budget of up to €3 million. DEBRA funds may be used in conjunction with funds from other grant bodies, where such funding does not constrain research goals or progress. Deadline: 2011-06-03

Department of Defense

Department of Defense (DoD) Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) Innovator Award

The Breast Cancer Research Program Innovator Award supports visionary individuals who have a history of creativity, innovative work, and leadership in any field including, but not limited to, breast cancer. The Innovator Award will provide these individuals with the funding and freedom to pursue their most novel, visionary, high-risk ideas that could ultimately lead to the eradication of breast cancer. Individuals may be from diverse organizations including, but not limited to, academic institutions, advocacy groups, government agencies, the private sector, the media, and/or professional societies. Since the intent of the Innovator Award mechanism is to recognize creative and innovative individuals rather than projects, the central feature of the award is the innovative contribution that the recipient can make to the eradication of breast cancer. As such, an individual selected to submit a full proposal is required to submit an essay addressing his or her area(s) of focus and how he or she will use the award to pursue his or her most creative vision in breast cancer research. The primary criteria for making these awards will be an individual's past record of creativity, their promise for continued innovation in future work, and an indication of how this award will create and further innovative strategies to solve the breast cancer problem. Experience in breast cancer research is not required; however, the proposal must focus on breast cancer and it is expected that the recipient will commit a minimum of 50% of his or her full-time professional effort to breast cancer research during the tenure of this award. Individuals must be nominated to be considered for this award mechanism; self-nominations will be accepted. Do not submit an Innovator Award proposal unless you receive a letter of invitation. Deadline: 2011-06-07; 2011-06-21

DoD Breast Cancer Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards

The Breast Cancer Research Program Postdoctoral Fellowship Award supports exceptionally talented recent medical or other doctoral or medical graduates in their pursuit of performing innovative, high-impact breast cancer research during their postdoctoral training and allows them to obtain the necessary experience for an independent career at the forefront of breast cancer research. Candidates for this award should exhibit a strong desire to pursue a career in breast cancer research. The proposal must articulate the potential impact that the proposed work will have on breast cancer, and how the proposed work is innovative. Under this award mechanism, the postdoctoral fellow is considered the principal investigator (PI) and should write the project narrative. The research should be based on a sound scientific rationale and on a thorough review of previous work in the field. While the PI is not required to have previous experience in breast cancer research, this proposal must focus on breast cancer research. Proposals must emphasize the PI's high potential for success in becoming an independent breast cancer researcher based on his/her qualifications, achievements, letters of recommendations, and training plan. Maximum funding is $300,000 in direct costs, plus indirect costs, for a period of performance of up to 3 years. See full program announcement for eligibility requirements. Deadline: 2011-06-07; 2011-06-21

Countermeasures Against Chemical Threats (CounterACT) Cooperative Research Projects (U01)

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) encourages grant applications for Countermeasures Against Chemical Threats (CounterACT) Cooperative Research Projects (U01s). The mission of the CounterACT U01 program is to develop new and improved therapeutics for chemical threats. Chemical threats are toxic chemicals that could be used in a terrorist attack or accidentally released from industrial production, storage, or shipping. They include traditional chemical warfare nerve agents such as sarin and VX, and toxic industrial chemicals and pesticides such as cyanide, chlorine, parathion, and sodium fluoroacetate. The scope of the research to be supported includes basic target and candidate identification and characterization studies, through candidate optimization and demonstration of in vivo efficacy, through Investigational New Drug submission and phase I clinical trials when appropriate. Each project must include milestones that create discrete go or no-go decision points in a progressive translational study plan. The participating institutes intend to commit approximately $6 million per year in fiscal years 2012, and 2013 to fund new and/or competing renewal awards. The expected direct cost for individual awards is $300,000 to $500,000 per year for most studies within the scope of this FOA. Deadline: 2011-08-14; 2011-09-14; 2012-08-14; 2012-09-14

James S. McDonnell Foundation

Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards in Studying Complex Systems

Students completing doctoral training, particularly in a multidisciplinary field such as complex systems science, benefit from postdoctoral training providing an opportunity to broaden research experience and acquire additional skills prior to pursuing a career in academia or elsewhere. Success in securing a postdoctoral position, particularly those providing training that adds new dimensions to a student's doctoral education (adding theoretical skills to one's experimental training or vice versa; pursuing work in a new topic or field), oftentimes depends on the availability of funds to support positions via institutional training grants or faculty research grants. The latter case can result in a postdoctoral fellow engaging in a research project dictated by the needs of the research grant rather than his or her interests or goals. The James S. McDonnell Foundation (JSMF) is initiating a new postdoctoral fellowship opportunity in the area of complex systems research. The JSMF Fellowships are intended to provide students in the final stages of completing a Ph.D. degree with more leeway in identifying and securing postdoctoral training opportunities in complex systems research (as defined on the JSMF Web site). The program, following review of applications, provides selected doctoral students with "letters of intent to fund" that the student can use in negotiating with potential postdoctoral training institutions while the student is in the final phase of graduate school. The JSMF Fellowship is designed to provide students with an opportunity to seek potential postdoctoral research opportunities on the basis of the student's interest and desire to obtain additional skills and experience that will further their pursuit of careers in complex systems science. JSMF Fellowships are not awarded until the student applies to and is accepted as a postdoctoral fellow at a qualified 501(c)(3) institution (or equivalent) and the sponsoring institution submits an acceptable application to JSMF. The likelihood of funding being awarded to the institution if JSMF's criteria are met makes it possible for the student to identify and pursue post-doctoral training positions best aligned with his or her research interests and offering a genuine opportunity to gain novel research skills in a supportive environment without being limited to institutions with available funds.
