Founders Affiliate Clinical Research Program
The goals of this program are: (1) to encourage early career investigators who have appropriate and supportive mentoring relationships,(2) to engage these investigators in high quality introductory and pilot clinical studies that will guide future strategies for reducing cardiovascular disease and stroke, (3) to foster new research in clinical and translational science, and (4) to encourage community- and population-based activities. This grant is not intended to fund basic science or to support senior researchers, but encourages mentoring of early career investigators. Funding is available for research related to cardiovascular disease and stroke prevention or treatment, or to related clinical and public health problems. Proposals are encouraged on provider behavior, patient behavior, behavioral outcomes, risk factor outcomes, disease outcomes, cost benefit analyses, efforts to evaluate outcomes of patient care delivery and patient/provider and/or system compliance and adherence to recommendations, as well as pilot clinical research studies that may provide preliminary data for larger-scale investigation. Also, encouraged are studies utilizing existing databases. Ancillary studies or a clearly defined sub-study of an ongoing clinical research study are also encouraged. There must, however, be clear justification that the proposal is a sub-study and not a piece of an already funded project.

The Pacific Southwest Research Station (PSW) of the, U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service is seeking proposals as part of the Tahoe Science Program funded by the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act. The purpose of the Tahoe Science Program is to provide high quality science to effectively meet environmental goals in the Lake Tahoe Basin (LTB). Research projects funded through this program need to help answer the most pressing management questions facing land managers and regulatory agencies in the Lake Tahoe basin and to promote more effective environmental improvement projects. Accordingly, proposals should include provisions to ensure that relevant stakeholders in the LTB will be engaged early and throughout the project, and proponents are advised to explain how their results could be used to evaluate environmental improvement efforts in the LTB. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA)issued by the National Cancer Institute, and the National Institutes of Health, invites grant applications for health services research that address the utilization of emerging cellular, molecular, and genetic or genomic (CMG) technologies in cancer care. The studies will assess CMG technologies in relation to: (a) quality of care; (b) organizational barriers and change factors in utilization; (c) cost and cost-effectiveness; (d) disparities in access and efficacy; (e) monitoring of cross-sectional patterns of care and time trends; (f) impact on existing standards of care; and (g) influence on cancer outcomes such as incidence, progression, mortality, survival, and quality of life. This FOA specifically encourages research on commercially available CMG clinical tools already in use, as well as experimental tools in the later stages of development and/or in the regulatory approval pipeline. The funding opportunity also encourages interdisciplinary collaborations between health services researchers and those in the clinical and/or translational sciences.

Behavioral Pharmacology and Genetics: Translating and Targeting Individual Differences (R03)
Individual differences in response to drugs of abuse may confer vulnerability or resistance to drug abuse or the development of addiction. Several lines of evidence indicate that genetic variation contributes to drug abuse and addiction as well as to the propensity to use specific drugs, such as psychostimulants, opiates, marijuana, and nicotine. Recently developed genetic methodologies make it possible to better understand drug abuse phenotypes in terms of underlying genetic factors. This funding opportunity announcement seeks applications that use controlled, human laboratory-based experimental techniques for the measurement of behavior, combined with genetic analyses, to study drug abuse phenotypes and/or endophenotypes, and their relationship to: (a) individual differences in response to drugs of abuse, (b) individual differences in the consequences of repeated abuse, or (c) pharmacogenetic differences in response to putative or currently used pharmacotherapeutic agents for treating addiction. Research in these areas may identify genetic variations that will help define the biochemical mechanisms underlying drug effects and the associated biological and/or behavioral processes responsible for individual differences, and may suggest genetically targeted pharmacotherapeutic approaches for treating addiction.

Through this program announcement with set aside funds, the National Institute on Drug Abuse invites applicants to develop innovative drug abuse epidemiology or health services research in cooperation with academic centers supported through the National Insititues of Health (NIH) Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA). A major NIH initiative and consortium, CTSA is transforming how clinical and translational research is conducted, building an infrastructure for multidisciplinary researchers and clinicians to perform research and develop new treatments more efficiently. As a part of this infrastructure, CTSA sites have established partnerships with a range of clinical settings and have access to large, multi-generational population cohorts. These features of CTSA sites offer a unique opportunity for researchers to integrate drug abuse epidemiology and health services research in these settings. Applicants are asked to propose innovative drug abuse research that builds upon the resources available at CTSA sites that would include CTSA efforts to strengthen networks of clinical sites and to establish innovative information technologies, phenotyping systems, and biobanks. A broad range of drug abuse epidemiology and health services research areas will be supported under the auspices of this program.

Exploratory Studies in Cancer Detection, Diagnosis, and Prognosis (R21)
This funding opportunity announcement, issued by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), invites grant applications from institutions and organizations that are interested in developing and testing innovative methods in cancer detection, diagnosis, and prognosis. NCI is especially interested in research studies that focus on the development and testing of improved methods for detecting specific characteristics of cancer, which can be subsequently used for the clinical management of cancer patients or individuals who are at risk for developing cancer. It is important that research studies focus on the search for molecular and cellular differences between tumors, premalignant, or normal tissues.
