Karolinska Institute Career Day

Event Info

On Saturday, November 7, 2008 the Science Careers Outreach Program collaborated with the Karolinska Institute to offer a Career Day for KI students and postdocs in Stockholm, Sweden.

Event Summary

The Outreach Program had collaborated with KI on this event in the past and we were happy to be able to resume the collaboration again this year. Approximately 250 attendees came to the Career Day. Among the attendees were undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs from various science and engineering fields. Throughout the day, sessions presented information about various science career paths, including postdoc positions, the academic career path in Sweden, industry careers, networking and mentorship, managing research projects, branding, publishing, and alternative careers.

Among the speakers were two people from AAAS: Center for Careers in Science and Technology Director Ric Weibl presented on Nontraditional Careers and Science International Managing Editor Andrew Sugden talked on Publishing in Science. During lunch, speakers were available at the lunch tables to allow participants to further explore the information presented in the sessions. At our table in the exhibit hall, the Science Careers staff was able to answer participants career-related questions as well as pass out literature. They were kept very busy with a steady stream of inquisitive attendees, and we distributed over 200 copies of the Career Basics booklet, as well as many copies of Science.
